Is bottlenecking a common thing, if so - will it occur if I get a 970 with this hardware and the following games?

I play:

  • TESV: Skyrim
    Project Reality (Battlefield 2 Mod)
    ARMA 3
    Source Engine Based Games
League Of Legends (Not that it matters much as it runs smoothly already)
    Crysis 3
On the following hardware:

  • i5-2320 3.0GHz X4
    6GB DDR3 1333MHz
Sapphire 6770 (Same as the 5770, not that it's too relevant but there it is anyway)
    A HDD, not an SSD
    1440x900@75Hz
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

By the definition of a bottleneck every computer has one, as there is always going to be one part that is less then others, now the more balanced your computer is you start getting down to a part bottlenecking you 1-2 percent so no real worries.

In regards to your situation:
I would upgarde ram to 8gb as that will hold you back a little bit, and if your system supports faster ram I would get faster ram.
The cpu might be a very slight bottleneck for a 970 but the cost of a new mobo and new cpu is not worth the 10% gain in cpu.
The HDD will obviouslly be slower then an SSD, but for gameplay this plays no role in performance as the game plays in memory.

I don't think you quite understand what a bottleneck is. Bottlenecking is always 100% guaranteed to occur in every PC with everything you do, the bottleneck is simply the slowest component, it's the part that limits the maximum speed of whatever you are doing.

So for example some of those games you list are more CPU dependant (Crysis 3 for example) so would be bottlenecked by your i5, some are more GPU dependant (Source games for example) so would be bottlenecked by the Geforce 970.

A good answer to this thread is that a Geforce 970 and an Intel i5 2320 would make a good, balanced gaming PC and would be able to run all games at 1440x900 without any trouble at all.

I'd never thought of it in that way before, that makes a lot more sense to me now so thanks for that. A lot of people are saying I may get a small amount of bottlenecking or none at all over on my reddit post so either way it sounds good to me as it won't always be using that CPU.

Again, this sounds good to me as it won't be using this system permanently.

Thanks guys for the responses.
