Hello, I will most certainly be purchasing the GTX 970 in the coming weeks, but I'm not sure my computer can handle it.

Specs:

  • Intel i5-2500k 3.3Ghz (stock speed)
  • AsRock Extreme3 Gen3
  • Antec 750W Gamer Series
  • CM Hyper 212+
  • 8GB GSkill RAM

  • My main concern is if my CPU be able to handle the new card and if I should upgrade to a higher tier PSU (maybe from EVGA or SeaSonic)?

Secondary concern is the exact model of the 970. I've heard MSI parts die faster (especially on motherboards?). I'm currently deciding between MSI or EVGA FTW. I understand that they just released yesterday, but any model suggestions here would be great.

    Thanks.

well we cant really suggest a brand right now cause it has just been released. so nobody have ever used it for quite a while. but Asus and evga is a trusted brand. 2500k can handle a 970 for sure. and you can overclock it for better performance. so yeah it can handle the 970

That CPU is fine, it is not far off something like a 4670. The PSU is fine too, the 970 only draws 145w max. Not sure where you heard that about MSI but I would ignore it, its not true. ASUS is the most popular motherboard brand and they have the most complaints on forums yet people swear by the quality. Go with what is a good price, MSI is a better brand the EVGA which is a budget make, not that it matters

your 2500k should be fine with the new gpu.

as for the models of 970, only time will tell which brand will last longer. generally, they should last to your next upgrade(3 to 5+yrs normally?). unless you are overclocking as heck.

I would suggest EVGA cards based on there past feedback reputation. however, just like picking on a psu, it all depends on the luck come to how long it will last.
