I5 4690k
Msi z97 g45 mobo
750w psu
Air 540 case
Gtx 980

I am going to be playing games like bf4 and new upcoming releases like witcher 3. Will the 980 be overkill for 1080p gaming and should I yet a 970 or a lesser card?

No,it won't be overkill.
It is a perfect choice for that build,to be honest.

Considering the 980 is better than a 780ti, and seeing that I wouldn't recommend a 780ti for 1080, it is kinda ovsrki, 970 might be suited more but if you plan on going 1440p or 4k soon a 980 will be good, but if you're staying 1080p for a while, a 970 will be cheaper and more suited

I would get Asus Strix 970. But if you have money to throw around and pay 60% more fore extra 15% performance, then sure, get the 980.

The 970 is a much better value right now. It has 780 performance for barely over $300. The 980 at $220 more for about 20% more performance is overpriced.

If its 1080p @60Hz there will be lots of performance not be used at all. The 970 will easily max it out in newer games and also have excess performance at this. Unless OP decides to go 1440p, 144hz, or multiple display a 980 is the epitome of overkill.
