CD Rom show full CDs/DVDs as blank

I have a Sony Vaio SVE15127CN laptop with Windows 8. Whenever I put a disc in my CD Rom it either shows it as empty OR I get the "please insert disc" message when I try to open the drive. I tried cleaning the inside of the bay, re-aligned the transport and ran the "Fix it" troubleshooting software available on the microsoft website but nothing worked.The Device manage shows the drive as working properly and it shows up in My Computer. I am really in a fix as I need to use it for my college work and can't get it to work at all.

This optical drive is a nightmare! I would bypass the issue with an external USB drive.

Thanks for the reply. Is the issue with the optical drive itself and not with the computer at the software level? Are you aware of this model having faulty optical drives?

I shop from www.flipkart.com I would really appreciate it if you could recommend an external drive available here.
