Hi all,

I have two almost identical Gigabyte GTX 770 4gb OC (One Rev1 and the other Rev2) running in SLI with my triple screen setup.

The SLI seems to be working fine, the GPU's are running at the same speeds and the power is a 850 watt gold plus PSU.

However running games, in particular Black Ops 2, it runs perfectly for about 5 minutes (fps never dropping below 60) before slowing right down and showing nothing but a black screen. Game continues to run in background.

Any ideas/troubleshooting I can do?

Regards

How is your cooling? Are your monitoing your GPU temps while gaming and see what they hit when it blackscreens? Not all games are SLI friendly, new drivers sometimes break old games, one of your cards is bad, or they are just running hot. too hot.

What does Event Viewer say happened ?

What Brand / Model PSU ?

What are temps ? Try running Furmark and note temps at time it quits.

I monitored them out of game using evga precision, and they never reached above 50. But I didn't have an in game overlay or anything

I also ran the furmark stress test for a 584x1080 res which gave me a score of 2600 an
The temps never reached higher than 70

I haven't checked event viewer as I had to leave for work

PSU is a FSP 850W Aurum PRO Series Modular PSU, 80PLUS Gold

Running the Furmak flying donut stress test gives you temps on screen throughout the entire test .... it shud be run at your monitor's full resolution. Reading temps at idle doesn't help.

The furmark donut test made the temperature climb to 68 before it finished its cycle.

The temp monitoring with evga precision was when it was crashing in games

Cycle ? When ya run the stress test (as opposed to the benchmark) , you could go to bed and it's still running when ya wake up. Idea is to run it for an extended period to see if you can trigger the behaviour and maximize temps.

Okay I'll try that after work and post results. It was late last night when I did it so I assume I only did the benchmark (I had a line filling across the screen and when that was filled it showed me my results)

If it turns out the temperature is the culprit what are some recomendations for cooling if you don't mind?

Currently it's sitting in a larg case with plenty of airflow. However since the cards are SLI bridged they are slotted right next to eachother.

Thanks for your help thus far

You will soon know.

I select MoBo's with 3 sot spacing a s opposed to two to avoid this problem.

One solution of course is to WC

http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g57/c613/s2024/list/p1/...

Two of those.... check EK Cooling Configurator for exact model compatibility .... plus a Swiftech H220-X and a spare rad (cupla fittings and few feet of tubing will solve any cooling problem :)

My motherboard does have 3 PCIE slots all at the same speed. So I will try running them spread out without the SLI bridge (I have a longer bridge arriving in a few days) and see if that makes a difference. However the 3rd PCIE slot would put the GPU cooling fans very close to the PSU so I don't know how much airflow they will have access too.

I don't think I'm ready to undertake custom water cooling (Bit too much like hard work at the moment) unless I have no other choice so I will attempt to increase case airflow and work from there.

My water cooling so far is extending to closed circuit pre made unit for the CPU but unfortunately I haven't seen any like that for GPUs.

Thanks again, I'll give it all a go later on

The Swiftech H220-X is a basic custom loop water cooling system pre-assembled as an all-in-one. The H100i is a closed loop system .... you can't add things to it....it's aluminum and relies on high rpm fans. The H220-X is all copper, is open loop and uses slower fans and the pump is powerful enough that you can add water blocks to.

So you have a water block on your MoBo ? ..... just open the loop on the H220-X add some fittings and tubing and your MoBo is connected to the loop. Want your GFX card cooled ? Add an Asus Poseidon GFX card and again, add some fittings and tubing and your GFX card is cooled. Add a water block to your GFX card and again, no extra pump needed just add some fittings and tube (a rad would be good) and you're cooled.

Hi there,

I ran furmark again, Temperatures reached a 85 degree mark and climbed no further (Graphics began throttling to keep the temperature around 80 degrees), I had some stuttering but no crash whatsoever. Fans were audible through my case through this aswell.

Unfortunately, unless I am missing something, this doesn't explain much to why my system crashes when running games. Can I safely rule out temperature or is that still the likely cause?

Also the Swiftech cooling system looks like a nice middle ground between pre-packaged plug and play and entirely custom loops so I will look into it in depth and see if I can find a NZ seller.

Thanks again thus far

I'll check that out on release date and see where it goes. As far as the immediate problem goes, I completely removed the driver with driver sweeper, clean installed a fresh driver and have left the panels off my case to achieve some better airflow.

I have arriving tomorrow a set of 3 noctua 120mm case fans which in theory should give me a better case air flow once closed up and arriving today I have had a triple SLI Bridge which should allow me to increase the range between graphics cards.

Hopefully this sorts the problem out.

As far as watercooling goes, it is something I will be looking into more in depth. It's gonna take some planning however as my once large case is quickly becoming filled up.

Thankyou for your help far

Just an update in case you've had any ideas.

The case fans are installed (A total of 5 fans, 3 bringing in fresh air and 1 pumping out) .

The Graphics cards are actually spaced further apart than normal motherboards have them so there shouldn't be an issue there and they sit on a cool 20-30 degrees on idle and in game about 55-65 degrees.

The case is also 'space optimised' with the majority of the wires tucked around the back of everything.

However they still continue to crash.

Cards work fine on their own also.

At my wits end unfortunately.
