Office Networking Issue

Hi There,

We have a 24 desk setup in our office which is serviced all of a single switch & router.

We have a bunch of VOIP phones coming into our office but our U/S is a major issue due to area congestion & internet usage in the office (100mbit d/s, 3mbit u/s). We need to bring in a second line from another provider to ensure voice quality.

Without physically running more ethernet, can we have two routers (different isps) going through the same switch where one only services the internet and the other services only the phones?

Solution
Yes you can....... you could have both routers connected to the same switch in the same network (say R1: 192.168.1.253 while R2: 192.168.1.254) then assign as default gateway .253 for your VoIP phones while .254 for general internet usage.

Just bear in mind that QoS is a must for VoIP to work properly, so make sure the router that handles all the VoIP traffic has that function enabled.

Solution
Yes but you will need a very non standard configuration if you switch does not support vlans. If it does is as simple as putting the phones on a different vlan with the other router.

The non standard way to do this is manually set the gateway on the phones to the other router. Say your current network is 192.168.10.0/24 with the router on 192.168.10.1 What you could do is put the second router on the network as 192.168.10.2. You would disable the DHCP server on this device. Then on the phones you would manually change the gateway IP to be 192.168.10.2 rather than 192.168.10.1. The phones would then use the other router for the internet.

This can be done by using more advanced dual wan router but it would likely be simpler and cheaper to just buy a different switch for the VoIP phones if you did not want to mess with non standard configurations.
