Can I get a copy of Windows 8.1 using the serial key from my laptop?

Hi guys, building a new PC soon and was wondering if instead of shelling out £80 for a copy of Windows 8.1 or pirating it could I not just mount the .iso file onto a USB stick then use the product key from my laptop copy. If this is possible how do I find the serial key on my laptop and will this cancel my license for the laptop?

You should be able to. I've done it before with windows 7, and it didn't seem to affect my license. The product key will be on the sticker under your laptop, or you can go to the start menu, and go to the apps section, then right click on "This PC". After that, go down to properties, and left click it. You should see your product key there.

You cannot use the laptop license key for a new PC. Period.
Even if you could (and you can't), now you'd have a laptop with no legal license.

The OS is no less a part of a new PC than is the RAM/CPU/GPU/whatever.
Buy a new OS for the new PC.

It worked perfectly fine. I used a windows 7 disc on my laptop, and then used my wife's product key to activate it. Both of our laptops are still fully functional. This was almost two years ago.

The disk used to install and the license key used to activate are two different things.

You can use any Win 7 disk to install.
1 license, 1 PC.

What the OP wants to do is use the same license for two different builds. Laptop and new desktop.

I thought he just wanted use the same product key. That's what I did. However, I did use a new disc.

Yes, it appears he wants to use the license from a laptop on a new desktop build.
That will not work.

I am sorry for the confusion. I missed the part where he said "build", which infer's he's trying to do it to a desktop. That is, unfortunately, impossible.
