At 1440p, how long will I have in order to play on Ultra settings. Should I buy the $50 2 year replacement plan @ Microcenter, I know theirs is the best replacement plan, and I used it before.

More about : long gtx 970 upgrade

I mean it just came on sale today...you have a good while before you would have to replace it. Even after the new cards to replace it come out.

You won't be able to max games at 1440p with a single 970 with 60fps. High settings is a different story. You'll get 60fps for sure

Then I can get a GTX 980 for $550 which is above my budget, or I could buy 1 GTX 970 now and 1 in a few months.

I'd get a 970 now and see how it performs. The 970 has incredible value and I'd recommend it over the 980 unless $ is not a consideration. You might be able to pick up another 970 at a reduced price around Black Friday, but I have a feeling Black Friday will be all about getting rid of the 700 series.
