I would wait for the 970 to come back in stock. The performance and the price is better.

Wait...that's way overpriced. Unless you need it immediately.

I think this article can explain it a little better than I can performance wise

But I would definitely wait.

I personally have a vapor-x 290, and its pure beast, but the 970 is on par with the 290, the 970 is cooler, cheaper, and is more energy efficient..

Like the others have said, wait. The R9 290 isn't as fast as the GTX 970. AMD will likely lower prices soon and the GTX 970 will slowly settle down to its reference price. Then likely you will still get the GTX 970 but keep an eye on the AMD cards as if the price drops low enough it might change things.

I would, having to RMA a GPU after a year isn't all that uncommon, you best wait and make sure you get that warranty. If you don't, watch after about 2 months it dies and you are out all that cash.

Get whatever has a warranty, If you feel like a 290 is what you want now, go for it. But do remember, the 970 uses a lot less power compared to a 290, meaning it does not produce as much heat, and you have more room for OC'ing if needed.

End result, go for whatever fits you, we do recommend on waiting if you can get warranty with the 970. But if you truly cannot wait any longer, your missing around 20% performance going with the R9 290 vs a 970.

That is true the GTX 970 does have a lot of room for overclocking. Tomshardware didn't do it, but Guru3D and techreport did and they both got about a 20% overclock. Granted they probably raised power but still that means it will have some decent headroom to begin with.

I wouldn't bother waiting a few months, just until Monday. If the GTX 970 is already there then any response from AMD dropping prices will come fast and the GTX 970 will quickly drop to its reference price so I would just wait that long. Then make sure it has a warranty and buy whichever card you want. Still probably best to stay with the GTX 970 though. Performance is taking a jump up now, but its the first major performance jump since 2012, the GTX 780 Ti and the R9 290 cards were big performance jumps but only in the ultra high end, the GTX 970 symbolizes that there will be a fairly substantial performance increase from the Nvidia GTX 980 all the way down to the Nvidia GTX 950 I'd say, so its more important. Chances are performance won't jump this much again for another two years.

I highly recommend you wait for the warranty. Your chances of getting one which is dead on arrival are fairly slim, but it would really suck to have it die come December and there isn't anything you can do about it. GPUs die probably more often than all other computer parts combined, certainly more than CPUs, motherboards, hard drives, SSDs, RAM, disk drives. Power supplies also die a lot less after you exclude the junk models.
