I have a Verizon fios Motorola dvr. I plugged in a esata 1tb hdd to extend storage it works fine. My question is the hdd never stops spinning (24/7) is that harmful to the hdd to never sleep?

Solution
It should be fine. Most manufacturers have a specific line for such applications. The WD Purple, for instance.
But an enterprise drive should be fine.

when it dies, it dies.

The regular drive inside the DVR is also running 24/7. As does the drive in a TiVo. Or in a surveillance cam setup.

Will it die 'earlier'? Yes, probably.
But I had a TiVo that lasted years before the drive died, a security cam setup that has run 24/7 for years, and a Verizon DVR box that has run for years.
