I'm building a new computer and considering using my old GeForce GT 520 on the new pc. I don't game as much as I use to, but may pick up a new game with this new pc. Was wondering if the GT 520 would still be better than using the onboard video provided by the ASUS Z87-PRO LGA 1150 + Intel Core i5-4590 I plan on buying.

Thanks,

Solution
The integrated graphics are faster than the 520.

Also just curious, but if you don't game what is the system going to be used for?

Programming is my day job and my hobby. Plus the family uses it for their typical internet browsing and such.

If I do pick up a game either a shooter or MMO type game, what kind of performance could I expect withe built in video. I'm not opposed to buying a video card, just being practical in that if I don't need to spend $200 then I shouldn't.

Thanks for your advice/help.

The i5 should work well for programming. The built in graphics aren't really meant for games but you should be able to play them around low settings. If you're looking for some eye candy and smoother gameplay you could add a more powerful discrete card such as a R7 260x which go for around $110. It really depends on what type of fps/mmo you plan to pick up. If it's games like counter strike and WoW then the GT 520/ Intel HD should work. If it's heavier games such as Battlefield and Star Citizen then you would nee a more powerful GPU.

I would pick up a cheaper motherboard and used the money saved to get a Xeon 1231 V3:

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($247.94 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H97 PERFORMANCE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($74.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $322.93

The Xeon is like an i7 without the integrated graphics. You would need to add in your GT 520 in order for it to work.

If you wanted a cheaper i5 build:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($179.99 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: ASRock H97 PERFORMANCE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($74.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $254.98

You make a good point about spending less on the MB. Honestly, in the past I've over bought my MB based on features I end up never using. I've always tended to buy Asus products are the ASRock products pretty solid? I think one of their boards was mentioned in a review of the z87 chipset on Tom's hardware.

In regards to the CPU I was relying on info from Tom's hardware and saw that the i5-4430 was the best value in that it's performance was 90% of what the $300+ CPU's where. So I'll have to look at the XEON processor.
