Hello all,

First and foremost, I know this probably the hundredth thread regarding the GTX 900 series cards. While I like the GTX 980, for a bit more (roughly $125) I could grab two GTX 970's and put them in SLI. With that said, I would be coming off of GTX 670 FTW Edition cards in SLI. Does the upgrade make sense? I skipped the 700 series largely due to marginal enhancements in performance.

Couple of additional clarifications:

1. The reason I am looking to do this is to just sell off my 670's before they aren't worth anything. I am a tech junkie/latest and greatest kind of guy. This is actually the first pc I have build that has lasted more than a year. With all that said, the replacement video cards would be moving from this system to a new system I plan to build Q2 next year (this assumes skylake isn't delayed).

2. I understand I can always add another 980 for SLI (this would likely "future-proof" the system for quite a long while. The term "future-proof" being loosely used as nothing is ever "future-proof".) The one thing that does stick in my head is to have one really good card and just ditch SLI. I have just been running SLI for a long time now. When we look at pricing and performance, is one GTX980 at $550 that much better than purchasing two (2) GTX970's at roughly $650-$660?

As an aside, I will be upgrading monitors in the future beyond 1080.

Thoughts?

THanks

chris

Good question.

Are you satisfied with your current performance?
Are you having dual gpu issues?

I think GTX970sli or GTX980 makes sense if you are experiencing problems now.

If you are looking towards next year, I expect the current GTX980/970 cards to be replaced with 20nm variants which will be better.

Today, I think a single GTX980 will be plenty for any single monitor short of a 4k monitor.
If you are going 4k, or even triple monitor gaming, then GTX970 sli seems to be a real deal.

The 670's are still running fine albeit it overclocked a bit. Finding some of the newer gaming experiences aren't as smooth as previous generations, but this is just because of the gaming industry trying to innovate and do something different things with new technology. With that said, I am currently running a dual and sometimes triple monitor setup (I have another system next to me being utilized as a server so that is the reason for not using a triple all the time). The GTX670 variants I have are only the 2gb models, so off the bat I am gaining another 2gb with whatever card I do go with.
