I have a Dell Inspiron 17 5000 series laptop with an i7 4510U and a GT840M GPU. It runs perfectly when plugged in but the moment it is plugged out the GPU speed jumps down and games lag like crazy (from 60~ fps to 5-10fps). Can anyone help me with this? Is this built into the laptop or is there an option somewhere to change it? It is surely the 840m that's the problem because if I run the game with the integrated card and plug out the battery the performance stays the same and is waaaay better than an unplugged 840m which just isn't right.

If there's no way to change this setting then is there a way to change what graphics card you're using while playing the game? That way, when I plug my laptop out I switch to the Intel HD without having to restart the game.

Tried that, tried changing the "on battery" settings on the Nvidia control panel. So far nothing has worked.

I did that. That was the first thing I tried.
