Solution

Apart from a few rare exceptions, all retail Intel motherboard support all CPUs related to their respective product cycle and quite often, most CPUs using the same CPU socket - albeit after a BIOS update if the manufacturer bothers with producing one.

The concern about a motherboard supporting a same-socket, same-generation CPU upgrade is mostly for premade computer from large OEMs like HP and Dell.

When in doubt, check the manual / manufacturer specs.

pentium g3220 with 7790. the e8400 will suffer with the 265 and you cannot update later. with the 3220 you can get used cpu like the 3470 or 3770... with good value...

the 7790 can deliver high boost on 1920x1080 games. i got one here and like it alot!

The E8400 is nowhere near powerful enough to drive a R265... it is not even good enough for the HD7790.

The G3220 gives you more upgrade options for later and more decent balance for now... such as adding more DDR3 memory or getting a higher-end GPU or CPU.

Most games heavily favor single-threaded performance and the Pentium G based on the Core iX architecture has much better single-threaded performance than anything from the Core2 era.
