My PC specs are:

PSU 850w, RAM 12gb, Processor Intel i3-2100

The only thing that worries me obviously is the processor, it's old. I know that if I can make it work, it won't be near as good as it would be on a i5 or i7 platform, but my question is basically if it's compatible or not.

More about : run gtx 970 intel

the processor is not 'old' it's a little weak, and will be the constraint in many circumstances making the 970 a bit of a waste. However as you as you upgrade that cpu in it'll unleash the 970, and considering the cost of the 970 (compared to a more reasonable for your CPU 760) I'd still say it was reasonable to buy one expecting that you are going to upgrade the CPU in the next 6 months.

there are no reasons why it wouldn't be compatible. it'll work just fine albeit not as efficient as it can be with an i5/i7.

the older pcie 2 interface wont cause an issue with the 970, but look at a new cpu used 2400's can be found for really cheap these days when purchased used.
