Hi friends,

Firstly thanks for reading this post and helping out. I currently have a i7 -950 @ 3.06ghz and a GTX 560. With the release of the new 970's im thinking of getting one soon. However the GTX 770's are also on discount so they can also be considered for me, but 970's are appealing for future proofing.

However I'm concerned at how much of a bottleneck the i7-950 would be to my system? I've did a little bit of research and probably should be overclocking it to at least 3.8ghz.

Another option would be to spend a good chunk of money and upgrade my CPU/mobo (and i guess ram) to a i7-4790 or 4790k (does K just only allow for overclocking? its a fair bit cheaper)

My question to you guys would be how much performance difference, relative to my i7-950 @ 3.06ghz and GTX560, would I expect with :
1) 950 @ 3.06 + GTX 970
2) 950 @ 3.8-4ghz + GTX 970
3) 950 @ 3.8-4ghz + GTX 770
3) 4790 (k?) + GTX 970

I mostly play CS: GO at a competitive level and require high and consistent frames (250fps+ always ideally), but I do play other games as well although I'm not really into full ultra settings etc and I run 1080p single monitor

Thank you!

Definitely gtx 970 is 15 - 20 % better than gtx 780 and r9 290 and its very power efficient only 145 max TDP and runs on a 500 watt PSU and the performance difference from your old gtx 560 will be huge.

Thanks for your reply! Do you think that the performance difference will be greatly limited / bottlenecked due to my i7 950?

You can experience a slight bottlenecking but overclocking your CPU will solve that.

Your setup is very old. You need a complete new upgrade. And yes, i believe it'll bottleneck it. I suggest an i5-4670k or an i7-4770k and cooler master hyper 212 EVO CPU cooler. Another thing, you should get a Z87 or Z97 MOBO with SLI, because you should eventually save up for a second 970 after you buy your first 970 and you'll get a definitely 5 year future proof PC and it'll only slow down a LITTLE on 1080p

There is no meaning of buying a i5 4670k when i5 4690k is 1$ more that it . :p

And the processor is old but if overclocked to 3.8 or 4.0 there is no chance of bottlenecking my friend is using the same chip with gtx 780 at 3.8 clock speed.

An 1000mhz difference isn't much if any difference lol

sorry what ???
you mean 100 mhz .
well 100 mhz improvement for 1$ more is enough to change anyone's mind :)  plus the i5 4690k is haswell refresh which has much improved TIM (Thermal Interface Material) which will help in better overclocking and less heat issues.
