Hello grumpsalot!

The BIOS is the lowest level of recognition. If something goes wrong there, it's usually a jumper setting, cable issue, BIOS needs an update or in the worst case scenario, it could be a faulty hard drive.
The first most simple thing you could do is to power off the PC, change the SATA cable, start it again and see if BIOS shows the 3TB of capacity on your WD Red HDD. If you are able to update your BIOS, try and do it. If it works, then you can go in to Device Manager to partition and format the hard drive.
If this doesn't change anything, see if you could load the drive on another system (PC) and partition and format it from there, and then plug it again like this on to your system.
If none of this works, then may be you should RMA the drive for a new one. With every technology there's always a possibility that something makes an error and ends up faulty. On the links below you could find out how to RMA your HDD.

I hope any of this was of help!
Best of luck!

Hi!

I haven't posted to anything like this here. Though, this sort of knowledge is passed back and forth through the internet and many KB's; a probable solution to grumpsalot's problem, so it's absolutely possible you've read it or something similar somewhere. :)
