Strange Sporadic No Power/No Switch On Issue with Gaming PC

I have a PC that was recently put together:

1TB HDD
16GB RAM

Intel Core i7

MSI Z97 Gaming 3 motherboard

Corsair VS650 PSU

ASUS Nvidia GTX780 3GB

We have this odd issue sometimes where I plug in the power but it seems there is no power going to the PC at all and it won't switch on.

Normally the GTX 780 has two lamps that light up once the PC is plugged in. The telltale sign this problem has re-occurred is that the GTX 780 lamps do not come on when plugged in.

Whenever it has switched on after being plugged in, the PC hasn't given me any problems works really well - no crashes or errors at all.

The "No Power/No Switch On" problem only happens occasionally, like once every 14 days but it is very odd and I hope someone can enlighten me on what might be happening.

Thanks in advance.

If you are using a power strip, discard it and plug directly into the wall socket, at least for testing. If you have another power cord to use between the power supply and the wall socket, swap it out. Double check the connections from the power supply to the motherboard. Remove and reinsert the motherboard 24 pin and 4 or 8 pin power connectors. Make sure there is no corrosion or contamination in either the motherboard socket or on the power connector pins. If that does not help I'd probably replace the PSU. Get a quality unit that's tier 3 or above, preferably tier 2b or above, on the following list.

@darkbreeze: Thanks for your suggestions. I have tried removing the power strip and plugging the unit straight to wall outlet but to no avail.

I do not have a multi-meter and I'm not much of a hardware person. The shop isn't good at reacting to phantom problems - A couple of times when I've arranged for an on-site appointment, the PC switches on. And once it does that it'll be OK for weeks before the problem re-occurs.

One observation I did notice was that the clock in Windows 7 has the wrong date and time each time the PC "revives itself" so I'm not sure if maybe the issue has something to do with motherboard or BIOS.

Must further qualify that I did try plugging it straight to wall outlet the last time the problem occurred - 3 days ago. The PC went back to normal about 4 hours later within the same day - with the PC plugged into UPS and Power Strip.

In fact, I launched this thread from the same PC.

It's probably the CMOS battery. Aside from a faulty motherboard, the only thing that affects the real time clock function is a faulty CMOS battery. Change that out first and afterwards if you still have the same issue, we can look further at the MB and PSU but I'll bet that's the issue.
