I'm planning on building my own Gaming PC and I was planning on getting a NVIDIA GTX 780i gpu, which is DDR5, the motherboard I have got is an ASUS P9X79. Will these be compatible and work well?

Solution
Don't go for the 780 anymore since the 9xx series arrived.

But yes, a DDR5 GPU will work fine with a DDR3 motherboard because the motherboard doesn't use the memory on the GPU, it can't access it so you could use a DDR2 GPU or a GDDR5 GPU, your motherboard won't know or care.

and just to inform you a little, the memory of the gpu is not related to the memory of the motherboard, at least not in terms of compatibility. next time you won't have to worry about this :)

just think about it, if it was, then we won't be able to use (g)ddr5 gpu's as we have no board with ddr5 (we are just transitioning to ddr4). but since there are lots of cards with ddr5, then it is ok
