Hello all,

I'm thinking of selling my Sapphire R9 290 and buy a 970. But is it worth it? I like the low power consumption of the 970 and the overclocking headroom. The only thing that worries me is the 256 bit memory bus which can be a bottleneck for a higher resolution than 1080p.

I like my Sapphire R9 290, it's quiet and runs very cool. But when overclocking it likes to draw a lot of power.

So should I sell it and get a 970, or wait for AMD's newer cards, or...

wait for potential die shrink on Maxwell?

Solution
I don't like the 256 bit memory either, but I am sure that it works just fine. I have a GTX 780 Ti and plan on skipping the 970 980. If they release a 990 GPU I might would consider it. But instead I am probably going to upgrade to a 10,000 series or whatever it will be around 2016. Waiting on a die shrink, larger bit memory bus and more VRAM. I would see how much you would get for your GPU and if you can get enough to cut down any additional costs, then it would be worth considering for the power consumption, HDMI 2.0, DirectX 12, etc.

Worth is something only YOU can determine.
If your 290 is performing ok, then it is not of great advantage to swap it out.
If you want more performance I suggest a bigger jump to a GTX980.

Do not worry about internal specs like the bus width. The engineers select specs to meet price/performance targets. That resulted in a very good package for the GTX970.
It all comes out in benchmarks. They are very good even for 4k resolution.
