Hey guys,

Sabertooth 990fx mobo
AMD FX-6200
3x4gig Kingston HyperX
Geforce 570 GTX
120gig Samsung SSD (OS)
1TB Seagate HD
Thermaltake SMART 850w - OLD
Antec 850w HCG-M - NEW

*System is going on 4 years old

So I recently bought a new PSU since the Thermaltake seemed to be dying/couldn't support my SLI setup and started rebooting out of nowhere while playing CS:GO (this stopped after I lowered most of the video settings to MIN). After installing the new PSU, everything seemed fine until Windows didn't boot. I can access the full BIOS without any problems BUT no matter which drive I set to boot from first/select any drive to boot from manually, it comes up saying, "Reboot and select proper boot device or input boot media in selected boot device and press a key." I have checked every cable and connection with both power supplies to no avail including the SAME exact setup before the install with the old PSU. I tried opening and closing the CD tray with my Windows 7 install disk in it and pressing a key at this screen, and it seems to try to load, but after about 5 seconds it displays the same message. Also, it doesn't detect my 1TB drive at all and it doesn't sound like it turns on or spins.

As a sidenote, I did use an older 2x3 pronged power cable for the HDs and CD/DVD drive when the Antec came with different power cables with a 1x4 pronged design (I don't know what else to call them). I powered it up the first time after install with the 2x3 pronged power cable into a slot that seemed to accommodate a 2x4 pronged cable, like a PCI-E cable. First thing that came to mind was, "Oh crap! I fried my drives!", but I could still detect and boot (from BIOS, not full OS) from my SSD and CD/DVD drive; its only the 1TB drive that isn't being detected. A buddy of mine said something about my SATA controller being shot or something, but for the meantime, I'm going to check Best Buy/Newegg (yes, I know BB is a terrible place to buy PC parts) for a test mobo to try out and see if thats the problem since I doubt its the drives themselves.

Anyhow, thanks in advance to everyone who tries to help me out. All of your help is greatly appreciated!

With the power off, swap a detected drive into the sata port thats not detecting your boot drive. If its still being detected its not the sata port. Now, with the power off again, try the detected drives data and power cable on the undetected drive and see if its being detected now. We know both those cables are good. If its not detected then it looks like its your drive.

Popatim,

Thanks for your input!

I tried what you said and switched the power and data cables from the detected drive, OS SSD, to the undetected drive, 1TB Seagate, and the results are the same: the SSD is detected but shows the same message from before about "Select proper boot device", and the 1TB Seagate still isn't detected.

I just don't understand why the SSD is detectable but it won't boot from it? And the motherboard "seems" to be fine. Am I missing something?

Quick update: I got a new Samsung SSD in the mail, along with a brand new sata cable. I connected it via the new sata cable into a sata port that has never been used (I sprayed out the dust prior using compressed air). The new SSD is being recognized just fine, but with nothing on it, it's just that: a blank drive. I also switched the CD/DVD drive into a sata port that has also never been used, but the same results occur: Reboot and select a proper boot device... Etc. Really starting to think the motherboard is malfunctioning in some way so that will be the next thing I try. Really don't want to replace a whole mobo because it won't boot a disk.
