Hard Drive Makes Sound When Reading Data - Am I safe to Backup?

Guys. I went to remove some data from an old backup drive. The drive is silent when it is on. However, when I start to copy data the drive makes a ticking/grinding noise. I copied a couple of small files and it works fine so I assume the head is failing. Its a 500 GB drive that is probably half full. I don't care about the drive but I don't want to lose any of the files. Am I safe to copy the data to a new drive. I would have for the drive to get damaged because I pushed it. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks, Dave

Well, my alternative was going to be to send it to a recovery service. I don't want to spent money if I don't have to but if its that or lose my files I'm all in for the recovery service. This is why I was wondering if I should even try. Thanks!

If your HDD had head problems so bad they were dragging on the disks and damaging them, it would not work at all. So don't worry about that. As others have said, the sounds you hear probably are normal. Even if they are caused by heads re-seeking because of read errors, the unit is still able to read now. So go ahead and get your data backed up soon. THEN you can decide whether the drive actually has problems or not. For that, download some HDD testing utility tools from the website of its maker.

Is your data worth $300??

When a HDD starts making strange noises, I get real concerned about my data.

If I had irreplaceable files on the drive that I valued highly, I'd go the $300 route.
