Hi I develop software for the DK2 and I want the best experience for VR. I got an 780TI Classified Kingpin but would I be better with 2 GTX980 in SLI? (with the future VR drivers from NVIDIA) I wonder because the price of 2 980 (1098$) is close to the price I paid for 1 780TI (930$)

Help would be appreciated

Matthew

970 is not as good as 780 TI. 780 TI is now currently the 2nd best GPU. 980 is slightly (and when I say slightly I MEAN IT) better. Either GPU will allow anyone to play at any settings, everything should work. The difference is minimal. Power consumption will be lower only if you'll not overclock, and if you will then the power consumption in 980's will be raised, so the difference between 780TI and 980 is extremely small.

If you can afford it, and waste a lot of money to get minimal performance increase then go for it. If you want to save a lot of money and have slightly (VERY SLIGHTLY) lower performance, then SLI your current KINGPIN 780 TI.

Wait until nvidia releases something stronger than 5-10% from 780 TI. 25-35% stronger than...

He was talking about doing sli with the 980's though so that would be worth returning the kingpin x 1 for 980 x 2. Although the 980 only really beat a stock 780ti soooooo that isn't saying much considering majority of 780ti owners are overclocking their cards and the kingpin especially the 980 wouldn't be able to touch once the kingpin was really overclocked. Having said that though the 980 does beat a stock 780ti but as stated its a small victory.

That's what I'm saying. Flash the BIOS with Skyn3t one, and viola! Anyway, he wouldn't sell his kingpin easily, so why waste money and time when you can just get another kingpin for lowered price and get very slightly lower performance if not more or less the same? I mean difference is not noticeable. Even in games, you'll see no difference between 66 and 70 FPS.

EDIT: He bought his 780 TI when it was released. (He paid 980$ therefore, it's not worth selling. I'd SLI with another kingpin for obvious reasons).

Also, imagine if NVIDIA will release another card in 6-10 months that is stronger than 980. Do you think he'll do the exact same thing? Sell 980 SLI to get new card? I doubt it.

I say, get another KINGPIN, OC the hell out of it and be happy. I am with my 780 TI SLI. I'm not fanboying or anything, this is just a wiser choice.

as owner of 2 780ti classifieds I'm speaking from a monetary view as a kingpin is still $700+. Buying another for that price wouldn't make since. Selling the current one for $500+ then Taking that other $700+ he would have spent assuming he purchased new and dumping that into something newer. That's what I would do. If I could sell my cards for close to what I paid for them I would upgrade to the 980's just because it's newer tech finally and will (just like Kepler has been) be around as the newer tech for several years. Each chipset has a lifespan so to speak before its replaced by newer tech. Kepler was around for along time before the new stuff (maxwell) replaced it. If you can fairly easily get your foot in the door for the newer tech cards why would you not? Why would you drop another $700+ for a new (old) card when something better and newer has come out? Spending $200 more for and old chip card is ludicrous when the newer can be had for $500.

None of the current 900 series cards are worth upgrading to from similar 700 series cards at the 50-65% higher price point, for only 4-10% increase. If you have a Kingpin you could seriously buy 2 more and 3-way SLI them, save 200 dollars and then start your funding pool for your next series of cards. It won't be until the aftermarket boards get released that it will be worth going to 900 series from 700 series, unless you have a GTX760 2GB card or lower, or are planning on running 4K2K monitors(even so, the Kingpin is only 560 bucks right now). GTX980 are 650 bucks. Even if you have a 780 it is questionable as to whether the performance increase is worth the upgrade, especially when you can get a 780 Classified for under 400 dollars right now, 3 of them cost less than 2 GTX980 cards. I LOVE my 780 Classified cards!

Exactly. Only majorly noticeable difference right now is at 4K resolution. I am happy with 780 classifieds and I can wait for something with 6 GB or more of VRAM. I won't be on 4K for a while, as with many other people, so this performance increase doesn't matter to me. It might to Matthew. Now it is a pretty moot point as it is getting harder and harder to get the 700 series cards, most people now will be getting the 900 cards. Water cool your KingPin cards OC them to hell and they will rock for a while. still only 550 or so for a KingPin card.

Cool.... I have 2x ASUS GTX780...and purchased the new Vizio P series 60 inch 4k TV just for the 4k computer monitor. The graphics are fantastic...3840x2160....I cannot for the life of me ....understand why the 700 series cards have a DP output which will supply 4k at 60 hz and the new 4k tvs..most of them including my new Vizio does not have DP input. And the newer tvs are stating the will have HDMI 2.0 inputs and the video cards out now do not have HDMI 2.0 outputs. both directions are screwed up...I wonder if people in the development depts from high end gear ever talk to each other...????? I ordered 2xGTX 980, but have no word about getting them. I can't imagine how nice it will be when the 980 sli will be feeding the Vizio at 4k at 60 hz ?????.......that should be real fun..............................G

I won't be looking to buy any more 780's, unless they are EVGA Classifieds with the stock 80.80.31.01.80 BIOS rev. And even then I don't have a use for anymore cards right now. Thanks though! I am saving up for a while at this point to build water loop and wait for the next CPU/GPU series to release.

If you guys are talking about running 4k at 60hz then two 980s are better because of the 1gb of extra VRAM plus the way the card utilizes the MHZ of transfer speed is higher than a 780ti.

Just because the units have been discontinued indefinitely doesn't mean that they are not good cards. That is a pretty funky and up-sell comment coming from an NVidia specialist. When this thread was posted it was still worth getting a 2nd 780TI for SLI.
