A few months ago i bought myself an FX 8350 and motherboard for it to replace my intel pentium G850 since they were on sale and i've always wanted to try an AMD cpu. I was really amazed at first. I loaded up battlefield 4 and was blown away. I ended up selling my old intel cpu on ebay a few weeks later because i usually sell my old pc parts (this was a mistake).

I eventually loaded up other games like skyrim and guild wars 2 and noticed it wasn't getting nearly the same frame rate as my old pentium did. I even loaded up team fortress 2 and it would sometimes dip below 60 fps which shocked me since it's a seven year old game. I looked up the reason for this and found out amd is extremely weak in the single thread department.

Which brings me to my question, i really want to get back to intel soon because most of the games i play are cpu dependent. Should i upgrade to the i7 4790k? I would go for an i5 if my pc was just for gaming but i do a lot of video editing and really want to get into streaming as well. Sorry for the long post but i thought putting this into context would help, thanks for help in advance!

edit: i'm running a gtx 780 at the moment.

Everything depends on the actual game itself. Skyrim for example, is more cpu dependent. It's also heavily single threaded and Intel cpu's are better at that than a comparable AMD cpu. BF4 multi-player is optimized for multi-core and will use upto all 8 cores, so AMD is usually better there, unless you run an i7 with ht enabled to make 8 cores. The gpu is also a large consideration. Nvidia has pretty much locked down on Microsoft DirectX, which is king of the API's, so much so that AMD was forced into designing it's own api, and so we get Mantle.

Designing a pc around 1 specific game is gonna hurt. Skyrim and BF4 are on opposite sides. The i5 is the middle ground. It will do either side very well but excel at none. The 8350 will excel...

The i7 will blow you away much like you felt when you tried BF4 with the 8350...but in all the games. If you are doing a lot of video editing and streaming like you claim, then the i7 will perform better. If you have money to blow, really want better performance, or plan on making a second build...then go for it...otherwise I would stick with the 8350 for a while.

The FX-8350 is a great CPU but most games arent optimised for lots of cores but in the future they will and the fx-8350 you had will recover its glory. For better performance make sure you enable multi-cores in the games you play especially in old games. Make sure to see if the GPU isnt holding back your CPU before selling it. (BTW, whats your GPU). This CPU will run better in new games more optimezed. If your unhappy again dont buy a 4790k , change your GPU and it might be okay.

The 4690K will literally CRUSH the 8350 and EAT IT ALIVE, even when games are optimised for more cores. AMD's cores are way weaker than Intel's, but they compensate for it by adding a lot.

You are wrong. In some games it will be better, but it will not be INSANELY better like you describe. There are even games where the 8350 and i5 are the same.

OP, do not let Intel fan-boys tell you that an i5 will run circles around an 8350 in games. Simply isn't true.

i think it's because bf4 is really gpu dependent and since i have a gtx 780 the cpu doesn't really have to do much.

What i'm getting from all of this is that the i5 and 8350 are identical in most newer games but in older games and mmo's (which is what i play pretty often.) The i5 outperforms the 8350 due to AMD's weaker cores, that said i'll probably go with the i7 4790k just because my rig isn't just for gaming. I do a lot of video editing, music producing in ableton and like i said i want to stream soon. Thanks for everyone's help!

The 8350 will excel in bf4 but will suffer slightly in skyrim, but for the price, its livable performance. The i7 will excel at both, but you will pay a premium for that performance. Not only do the cpus cost almost double the price of the fx, but to get a decent speed from one you'll need a very good cooler, a budget cooler like hyper212 EVO just won't cut it when ht is enabled.

So, is the extra @$200 worth it for the fps you'll probably never see on a 60fps 1080p monitor?
