Can I connect my side panel 200 millimeter fan to any of my mobo's cha_fan or pwr_fan?

Previously I had my 200 mm fan connected to the front panel but the cables to the front panel sparked and started smoking yesterday. Nothing was damaged except those cables, but now i cant power the two front fans and the side fan. Ive noticed that there are two pin slots on my motherboard where i could possibly connect and power my side fan to. A pwr_fan and cha_fan. But my friend told me that connecting it to either might be too much power and would make the 200 mm fan spin too fast and possibly damage it.

Any more information on this please?

Depends on the fan and motherboard. Most motherboard fan headers have a 1amp or 12watt limit. If the power reading on the fan is less than that, then yes, you can power the fan off the mobo header. If it is more than 1a or 12w, I'd suggest either a fan controller which usually has headers capable of 30w, or 2.5a, or use a direct connect to the psu via a molex plug.

Cha_fan is controlable on most boards, with Gigabyte, some 3pin cha_fan headers are not. On my older Asus board pwr_fan was also not controlable, it being straight 12v power, but still limited to 1a or 12w
