Running windows 8.1, did a fresh install on a new hard drive a few months ago. Was installing new drivers today, and my system locked up. Now I am getting a system service_exception_error nvlddmkm.sys when my computer boots up. System does not work.

I chose the troubleshoot option, and tried the refresh your PC option. The drivers installed fine but upon restart, I get a similar error except it does not mention nvlddmkm.sys, it only says system service error. System restore fails.

I then tried reset your PC option, which is basically a fresh install of windows 8.1 as far as I am aware. Exact same issue as after the system refresh. System restore fails again.

I forget exactly when, but at some point during this process, I restarted the computer without trying to install the new nvidia drivers, and I still had launch problems. So it is not necessarily the graphics drivers that are the problem.

The computer had no issues during the initial install of windows 8.1 when I bought it and used it on a new hard drive, and has been working perfectly until today. Any advice on how to troubleshootor fix the issue would be much appreciated. Apologies if my formatting is off, I'm posting this from my phone. Thanks!

The only drivers I installed were for the graphics card. I will try to refresh windows and this time also update mobo drivers. Why would it work on first boot up without updated mobo drivers, but as soon as I restart they become a problem? I'm not the best with computers, don't understand how that would work :)

I tried to update my motherboard drivers, but the gigabyte page for my motherboard had a lot of different ones and i wasnt sure which to download. If I try to update the drivers for my motherboard again later, which ones do I need? I use windows 8.1 64 bit and a gigabyte P67A-UD4-B3 motherboard. http://ca.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3759&dl=1&RWD=0#driver is a link to the driver page for my motherboard. Maybe I need a bios update also?

So I used another hard drive to reformat the drive I have windows 8.1 on. Everything worked perfectly, no more error on startup. As soon as I installed the newest nvidia driver, the same thing started happening again. So its definitely the drivers.

I googled around a bit and found that people with gigabyte motherboards and windows 8.1 were having trouble with all nvidia driver releases since may or so, I forget the exact driver off the top of my head.

Does anyone have any idea how I might be able to deal with this, besides just using older drivers for now?
