I had been using my modem+router and ISP for about 7 years with no major problems.
About 2 weeks ago, my broadband stopped working. The DSL link LED on my modem+router would keep blinking.
The ISP engineer diagnosed a cable fault near my house and fixed it.
Still, the same problem persisted. The engineer used his test modem and it worked fine.
So, it seemed the problem was now with my modem. I bought a new modem+router (D-Link DSL-2750U).
The new modem works fine if I switch it on in the mornings.
If I switch it on in the evening, the DSL link LED keeps blinking. The modem manual says it means that "The device is handshaking with the physical layer of the office end."
At this time, if I connect a telephone to the same wire, it works fine.
If I switch the modem on in the morning and keep it on, it works in the evenings too.
This has been happening with 100% consistency over the last 10 days.

Any idea what could be going wrong? Apart from setting the ISP login credentials and WPA2 setup, I have not changed any other settings in the modem.
I am not in the US btw.
Thanks.

could be a bad splitter for the dsl modem. could be a bad phone or device in your home. check if your water or power company has a phone reader plugged into your phone line. have the phone company check to see if anyone has tapped your phone lines from outside the home. and is stealing your phone service.
