Its £50. I'm sorely tempted to buy this. If I do so am I going to have to spend more to get the full game or do they roll out the updates for free later?

As it stands, is the BETA at least half playable?

Solution
The only reason to buy this Beta is to get something you cannot get otherwise. For me, it was a good game for Oculus Rift DK2 support.
That is the only reason I bought into it, although I really liked the original Elite and may have been tempted anyway.
Beta 3 just got released and the full game is meant to be end of the year, so can just wait a bit longer...

However, getting DK2 up and running can be a pain, so if anyone does try it, here are some directions:

Never even heard of the game before but a quick visit to their website reveals this:

Elite: Dangerous - Beta
Buy the Beta Edition of Elite: Dangerous and get access to all the Beta development stages.
Start playing Elite: Dangerous today!

On the game's full release you also get the Elite: Dangerous Mercenary Edition, loaded with digital extras:
• A digital download Elite: Dangerous
• Your very own Eagle fighter ship docked in a secondary location in-game
• Exclusive pack of ship paint jobs
• A ‘day one’ ship decal
• A digital players guide
• A digital concept art book
• Plus loads more digital goodies to be announced over the coming weeks.

IMPORTANT: The Beta edition does NOT include any expansion downloadable content. These can be purchased separately as they become available.

Source: PC Gamer - Elite: Dangerous beta 2 goes live at the end of the month, original Elite is free right now

Since this article states the beta doesn't go live until September 30th, it's impossible to tell if it's playable (unless someone was part of the alpha test). As for the purchase, the article only states the beta is available from the Elite Dangerous Store for $75. Unless you're actually purchasing the access to the beta directly from the store, I'd pass as it's likely a scam.

Didn't click on your link but if you check the game's official website it says that BETA is now live. So that 30 September date is not correct.
