Hi all

Can anybody tell me, will ECC RAM function in my system? I know I won't get the added benefit of error correction and it will have slighty more latency, but will it run?
As far as I can tell the system supports the common 1.35v the memory will use but there is no info on whether ecc will boot or give a memory error at post

System is
i7 4770
Gigabyte ga-z87-hd3

The cpu support list for that board says it supports that Xeon. Which is strange since it's an 1155 socket cpu and the board is 1150. Why would they list it as a supported cpu when the sockets are incompatible. Different revisions of the Xeon maybe?

The Xeon supports ecc according to Intel and there are certainly Asus boards with full ecc support. Its second hand RAM, its in abundance do to server upgrades. I don't even care for the ecc functions I just want to know if it will boot or not. I don't think there is a way to tell without trying because the manuals and tech sheets only show what is supported not what is compatible. I know what I'm doing would be like sticking a top GPU in a 4x slot, but if you could get that GPU cheaper than any other one you'd still buy it right? Hence my question

Sigh. What is the model number of the ECC memory. If it's registered memory it won't work at all for sure, period. If it isn't, it still likely will not for many reasons. The board says non-ECC, like has been said already. The voltage requirements for the ECC are probably different. The Xeon won't fit that board anyhow so it's a moot point unless you want to go through the process of finding an i3 that supports it which is the only modern non-Xeon consumer class cpu that does support ECC (i5's and i7's do not, but apparently, some i3's do.) which makes little sense when you can purchase RAM cheaper than a CPU. So, basically, it's not an option.

Apologies on the Xeon its a 1245 v3 which will fit the 1150, not the original, don't think you can even get them anymore.
The DDR is ECC Unregistered 1.35v that's all I know. The board can go from 1.25v to 1.8v so the registered and voltage elements shouldn't be an issue, its purely whether it will work or not. I might just throw a stick in and see what happens

In that case, there is the very slimmest of possibilities that it will work, but in my opinion it's not worth the possibility of damage. I'd contact Gigabyte and ask them for confirmation as to whether or not it will work. The GA-Z87-WIFI board apparently does support ECC so who knows.
