First off, id like to state that i have an ASUS P5KR. Its an older motherboard model. Anyhow, when going to see the LAN drivers on the official ASUS website, it offers Attansic ones for Vista 64 which apparently cant be installed on 8.1. SO i let my OS decide what i should have for LAN drivers, it picked Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet. I also need to note that i never had problems with this configuration, not big ones anyhow. (ill explain later what the minor problem is).
Issue #1:
---------------------------------------------
Anyhow, recently i've started playing Terraria with my friend and we are talking over Skype while we do that. We play for a minute (i am the host) when suddenly i appear to lose connection both on Skype & Steam. My Windows doesn't recognize this at all, when i start troubleshooter, it says that everything's fine. I decide to stop the adapter. Right click ,disable, nothing happens. Right click, disable, nothing again.... I stop all programs, restart the PC, windows is now stuck on "Restarting" screen. Got no other options but to cut the power. Going back into the OS, everything works fine. Until we try to play again.
So far i redownloaded the drivers via Device Manager, that didn't work. Since i don't know what drivers my MOBO is supposed to have, im sticking with the Atheros one.
Issue #2:
---------------------------------------------
Now, there is another smaller problem that keeps happening on regular basis. Im just doing my own thing when suddenly internet goes out and i get a yellow exclamation sign. I start trouble shooter and it always detects & repairs: "Default Gateway not Available." I tried inputing ISP suggested settings into the IPV4 adapter and it didn't fix it.
Conclusion:
------------------------------------------------
Great people of Tom's Hardware, what is causing those two issues and how can i fix them?

It should have installed generic LAN drivers?? I wouldnt use Vista drivers in 8.1.
I would uninstall whatever LAN drivers you installed then go back to device manager go to the entry go to the details screen. Change it to hardware ID's. Copy and paste whats there in here, or Google
That'll tell you what it is
Under ipv4 put it on auto.

Yea, i mean i wouldn't use them but its weird because googling the name of the drivers got me nothing, no company website with newer drivers or anything.... IPV4 is now under auto as of the driver reinstall.
Right clicked on Atheros, put it on Hardware IDs, these are the results:
PCI\VEN_1969&DEV_1048&SUBSYS_82261043&REV_B0
PCI\VEN_1969&DEV_1048&SUBSYS_82261043
PCI\VEN_1969&DEV_1048&CC_020000
PCI\VEN_1969&DEV_1048&CC_0200
What am i looking at?

First of all you need to navigate to your temp folder, to get there you need to follows these steps:
Windows key + R > type: %temp% > highlight all files > right click > delete
This will make your internet run a lot faster
Second step is to flush your dns
Steps:
move your mouse to the bottom left corner > right click>Command Prompt (Admin) > type the following command > ipconfig /flushdns
Third step is
wifi only)
Navigate to your router's control page > wifi settings > change the wireless channel to either 1, 6 or 11 for the best performance.
If all else fails get Ethernet.

if you paste these into Google it'll tell you what it is. And it looks like it is Atheros. Even if the ASUS site doesnt have the drivers, you can still use some other motherboard's LAN drivers if theyre the same and for 8.1. Just make sure you get the right ones. If you use 64 bit you need 64 bit drivers
Mobo is in the 1st post Jack ASUS P5KR
Try this from another post here http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/58692-63-dropped-netw...
UPDATE: I've had no further occurrences of my 'dropped network' problem since disabling the Task Offload setting of my integrated Atheros L1 gigabit Ethernet adapter.
This I think will be under the general tab.

So it wouldn't be wrong if i went to the support page of one of the new ASUS motherboards and got the LAN drivers from there?

Yup just as long as its Atheros L1, and for 8.1 it'll work. Just remember to get the right one. 32 bit if you use 32 bit or 64 bit if 64 bit is installed

I also found this blog post which kind of describes my issues, will disabling Task Offload and Flow Control do anything negative?

You are a lucky person, I haven't been able to go a month without a issue on windows 8.1jackstrr said:
Drives, drivers, mouse, keyboard, Asus LAN drivers, blue screens, it's dreadfulNo issues like that here. But I do know if you install programs like AIcharger these can cause crashes. Programs like this, I avoid.
Everytime I install Win7 or 8, I just use the generic drivers. Theyre fine. Why install something else if generic ones work?
The only drivers I installed on this were the chipset / and wireless USB drivers from TPlink. Because the MS ones didn't give me an option to connect to 5GHZ connection on the dual band modem
I had to install the TPlink ones which did

Ah yes, the post kinda sneaked up on me
I put those settings to off (also the flow thingy just to be extra sure). Will do some testing and report back. -

Okay everyone, OP here. Sorry for late reply. This issue SEEMS fixed. I'll of course do more testing to see that it doesnt die no more but the steps i did were:
1. Temp files emptied (bout a gig of temp). Ctrl + R, write %temp% there.
2. DNS cache flushed. Ctrl+r, write cmd, run it and in CMD itself write "ipconfig /flushdns"
3. Turned "Task Offload" setting to "Off". Did that by going to Device Manager, Right Click on Atheros > Properties > Advanced Tab
4. Turned "Flow Control" setting to "Off". See previous step on how to do it.
5. Changed the power management option to High Performance and edited it to just take all the power.
6. Set IPV6 to off. Right click on the adapter in Network and Sharing Center > Scroll down the list to see "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" and uncheck the box next to it. Restart required.
7. Set a setting so that the adapter doesn't shut itself down to save power. Right click on the adapter in Network and Sharing Center > Configure... > Power Management > Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
Not sure if only #7 fixed it or the combination of all.
Just wanted to make a post with collection off all the things i did as well as the steps to do them.
Will post back in a day or two with final results!
