Completely fresh Windows 8 installation?

So, I recently figured out I have a virus on my computer when action center popped up and said "click this to restart to fix drive issues". When I did that, the computer restarted but gave me a blue screen and then restarted again and went into Recovery Mode which failed. The blue screen says "CRITICAL SERVICE FAILED". So, I figured a re-installation of Windows 8 would fix it since I didn't have anything important that I would lose. Anyways, when I re-installed it I selected the option that says it will start a fresh version of windows. But, when it finally finished, the first thing I see is that my desktop background is still there. All my other files except for the ones in program files (and program files x86) were there. I assume this is why my computer is now freezing, I'm guessing the virus is still there. Can someone please tell me how to completely wipe my hard drive and install a fresh version of windows? Thanks for your support!

(P.S. Malwarebytes doesn't pick up anything. It did find something about a week before this issue began, but it said it deleted it)

I have been booting from the Windows 8 DVD and selecting "Do not transfer anything from previous windows" and all my stuff is still there

Assuming you have a valid, legal Win 8 install and license -

Either:
Boot from the install media
Advanced
Select each partition and delete
Let Windows use the entire space to install to

or

Go nuclear:
Boot from a DBAN disk, and wipe the drive
Then boot from your valid Win 8 disk and install

I'm kinda new on this stuff, so allow me to ask: how does one delete the partition?

So I am at the screen with the partitions and there are two of them: one is labeled "System" with 100MB and one is labeled "Windows" with 931.4GB. Do I delete both or just the windows one?

If I delete the system partition does it delete the hardware drivers? What does the system partition do?

Right now I'll try just deleting the Windows partition. Ill post the results here

The System Partition contains the boot info. For a clean install, you need to delete that as well.
The clean install will create what it needs.

So, to be clear, if I delete the system partition, I won't need to install any hardware drivers? I didn't build the computer myself so I don't know if I can get my hands on the drivers

Yes, you will need to reinstall the drivers. They become part of the OS. Has nothing to do with the System Reserved partition.

You're looking to do a full reinstall, right?
That means everything, including the divers.

Get those now, and save on a USB or DVD. Install those after you install the OS.

Well, as I speak I've been installing windows after deleting the Windows partition. This might just work to remove the virus, but if the computer keeps freezing, I'll follow your suggestion and delete everything. Thanks again!

Well, just installed windows after deleting only the Windows partition, and first thing I see is still the same desktop background. I guess I'll go delete the system partition now and update you all on how that goes

EDIT: All the files that were saved in the last reboot are gone which is good, but something about that desktop background staying tells me that not everything was deleted. Does anyone know if that is maybe just a feature of windows 8? Does it remember your windows theme and keeps that memory on your microsoft account perhaps?

Most of the drivers Win 7 or 8 install are fine.. The only driver I install when I do a clean install is the chipset video drivers

And use the generic audio lan and wireless (but on this I had to install the Tplink wireless drivers). Since the MS ones I couldnt connect to a 5ghz connection it didnt have it. The Tplink drivers did

The screen shouldnt have anything on it. I think its the default yellow screen..

A clean install wipes everything. If you want to log in you'll have to do it again. And change themes etc

Yeah the theme says that it's a "synced theme" so I think that everything harmful was deleted, but I'll re-install the drivers just to be safe

Thanks everybody! Without your support I would be nowhere right now! The solution was to delete BOTH the windows partition as well as the system partition. Once I did that, upon boot I got a new error message that frightened me at first because it said something like "your system cannot boot due to missing drivers". Anyways, I rebooted the system and changed the boot priority back to the SATA hard drive, and it worked! Now EVERYTHING is off my system, and I don't have to worry about any more viruses. One thing to note is that my computer did freeze once about 10 minutes after setting up windows 8. I realized this may be because of either missing video drivers or missing windows 8 updates. I updated both of these and it seems to be working fine. Thanks again everyone!

P.S. The background and lock screen were still the same after I did the clean installation. In theme preferences, it calls it a "synced theme" so I'm guessing its associated with my account.

FOR ANYONE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AS I HAD FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW:

First, MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE that you have no data on your computer that you want to keep. In order to get the virus out of your computer, you will be deleting EVERYTHING.

Next, reboot your computer off of your windows 8 installation disc. I've tried doing it while in a session of windows, but it wouldn't let me do some of the necessary steps below.

Go through the installation and STOP when you get to the "Where do you want to install windows?" screen. This should be showing one or two partitions, one labeled "System" and one labeled "Windows". In the bottom right corner of the window, click the button labeled "Advanced" (or some variation of that). This gives you the capability to delete everything in each partition.

IMPORTANT: Now you're at the part where you can delete EVERYTHING on your hard drive. But first, to explain a few things: The "Windows" partition is where windows installs itself and stores all your data - this is most likely where your virus is. The "System" partition is where all the drivers for your computer components are stored - the virus is probably not here.

BEFORE CONTINUING TO NEXT STEP, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE NOTHING THAT YOU WANT TO KEEP ON YOUR COMPUTER. THE NEXT STEP WILL DELETE EVERYTHING!

Now, to get rid of that virus, click on the "Windows" partition and then click delete. It may warn you about manufacture drivers being stored in that partition, but as long as you have a "System" partition, the manufacture drivers are most likely not inside the "Windows" partition.

Here comes the choice. Now that you've deleted your "Windows" partition, you have most likely deleted the virus. BUT, if you want to do a completely clean installation of windows 8, you may want to consider deleting the "System" partition. PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU DO THIS, YOU MAY HAVE TO BOOT CORRECT DRIVERS IN ORDER FOR YOUR SYSTEM TO WORK! I recommend that you only delete the "System" partition if you really know computers well, and you know how to fix it if anything goes wrong.

After you completely erase the "Windows" partition, you can now select that partition and install windows 8 on it. Go through the steps of installation and you're done! You will now be using your computer like its fresh out of the factory!

I hope you found this helpful!
