Why isn't my 4790K stable at 4.8GHz?

I can get a stable overclock at 4.6GHz on a voltage of 1.20, which is a fantastic start, but when I try 4.8GHz it crashes. The closest I came to being stable was 1.35 volts and Aida test lasting 7 seconds.

Why can't it cope? My temps are good. At idle it is around 30°-33° and at 100% it is around 62°-70°. Am I doing something wrong? I have re-applied thermal paste several times, I've checked if I'm applying too many volts, I've dusted, I've put RAM in different sockets, I've tried different tests, I've tried all I can think of.

Is 4.6Ghz the best I'm going to get? Thanks for advice and replies in advance.

You didn't give nearly enough info if you are expecting a response from these people. You didn't say which cooler you're using, which case, which thermal paste, how you applied the thermal paste, which motherboard, number of case fans, etc....

Cooler: H80i
Case: Corsair C70
Thermal Paste: Standard cooler master thermal paste (I quickly replaced this but kept the thermal compound)
How applied: Straight line going down the middle. This worked best for me after lots of testing.
Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Hero (exchanged 4770K for 4790K)
Fans: x4 120mm front (two behind bays), x2 120mm top, x2 side panel, x2 mounted on h80i rear. Rear and top are only exhausts.
GPU: EVGA 780 Ti SC Edition (reference cooler)
PSU: Corsair 860 ATX

Overclocking is never an exact science. Just because your buddy can get to 4.8 GHz doesn't mean you'll be able to. If you're stable at 4.6GHz, consider yourself lucky and call it a day.

some chips absolutely will not work at higher frequencies

Guess you're somewhat lucky and unlucky. My chip needs 1.22v for 4.6ghz but does 4.9ghz on 1.37v stable. You are lucky that you need less voltage at 4.6 but can't get 4.8 stable. Have you attempted 4.7ghz?

4.6ghz is nothing to sneeze at. That seems to be the upper limit that a lot of people reach; there are many who struggle to get beyond 4.3ghz.

The changes/augmentations made for the Devil's Canyon refresh did not help the overclock ceiling too much.

I have, but due to the instability of 4.8GHz barely managing at 1.35V, I don't feel comfortable using 4.7GHz right now.
