NET: Can someone tell me what have I done or not done to get the second 8MB card
Any help would be appreciated. If more information is required about my system, let me know
and I try to supply it ASAP.
Thanks!
============================================================
My Asus Z87-Deluxe motherboard stopped working after almost a year of trouble-free operation.
I was doing an Internet search when the system froze: I could not move the cursor and the keyboard was unresponsive except for occasional windows that came when I randomly hit various keys.
I manually powered off using the external power on/off button on the case and attempted to
password screen was presented.
I then rebooted and entered the Bios via PF2. The keyboard and mouse worked normally while in the Bios. That is to say, that I could use the mouse to go to other Bios screens and make changes using the keyboard. This suggested to me that the problem was probably in the Win7 OS.
After some thought, I decided to re-install Win7/SP1, using the "bare metal" OEM DVD I received when I with the parts for the PC. That, by the way, was a separate "learning experience". For the record, I installed the "MBR" version of Win7, not the UEFI version. (Could this the problem with the memory not being recognized?)
After finally getting Windows re-installed, I checked the machine configuration using Windows and noticed that only the 8MB of memory was thought to be installed. I restarted and
verified this situation by looking at the Bios view of the memory configuration which
showed only the 8MB in Slot A2 was recognized. There was nothing noted for the
B2 slot or the other two slots, A1 and B1.
I spent some time checking the 8MB card in memory card in Slot B2 to ensure it was
properly seated, including physically removing and re-installing the memory card in Slot B2.
FYI: Slots A2 and B2 are the slots recommended for a 16 MB configuration in the "Asus Z87-Deluxe User Guide" ( see page 1-10).
I searched for a solution on the Internet and found a user on this site who had experienced
a similar, but not the exact same, problem: his problem occurred when he initially started up
his new Z87-Deluxe motherboard. He also noted that if the two memory cards were
installed in Slots A1 and B1, not the slots recommended by Asus, they worked.
His motherboard was at the same revision level and Bios level as mine when he encountered this his problem:
Motherboard: Revision Level 1.03
Bios Version: 8103.
He updated his Bios to the current version, 2103, and then the two memory cards worked
"as advertised" in the Z87 User Guide in the A2 and B2 slots.
Based on his experience, I successfully updated my Bios today to the same 2103 version, but the CMOS still does not recognize the 8MB memory card in Slot B2. I have also run the Windows "memory checker" utility which finds no errors. However, this is likely because the program doesn't "see" the 8MB card in slot B2 - what I would expect, if the Bios can't find it.
Do I need to disconnect the power cord from system or maybe execute a CMOS reset to
fully activate the updated 2103 Bios? I have not tried that nor have I tried putting the
two memory cards in the A1 and B1 slots as the other user did.
It is always possible, of course that the second memory card developed a problem which causes
it to be unrecognizable by the firmware.
Thanks!
