Build

- ASUS Z87-A
- G.SKILL RipjawsX 32GB 4X8GB DDR3-1866 1.5V
- Cooler Master Storm Trooper EATX Full Tower Case
- EVGA mITX ACX CPU Cooler
- Intel Core i7 4790K (not overclocked)
- Samsung 840 Evo 250GB SSD
- WD 2TB SATA
- Be Quiet! Power Zone 850W
- ASUS GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB
- Windows 7 64bit enterprise

Issue:

The CPU_LED red light cold boot error, monitor display is on but says DVI no signal, usually when the CPU or power supply is off for more than 2-3 hours, that's when it always happens, and always on the first boot. No POST

I'd have to press the power button to turn it off, then the powering it on for the second time always makes it goes straight to Windows.

Once i am in windows everything's fine, no lock ups, freezing, no issues, I am just stumped what might be causing this.

What i've done so far trying to solve the error:

1. I updated the ASUS z87-a BIOS to 2103
2. Installed the ASUS driver for 4th gen intel processors, from their site.
3. updated all the drivers GPU, wlan card
4. loaded optimized defaults on the bios
5. memtested all the RAM sticks (all passed without errors)
6. tried to test one RAM stick per slot on the motherboard all worked properly
7. rechecked all the cables and if they are all fitted correctly
8. cleared CMOS

I have searched similar threads with the same problems but there's seems to not be any clear solution, the dates on these threads though are kind of old, i was wondering if there are any new solutions to the problem. Thanks in advance.

This is a common problem with a lot of Z87 owners, including myself.

There are a lot of threads about it. I do not know if anyone has compiled these threads and contacted ASUS support yet, but rest assured it doesn't seem to be a real problem just scary - flipping the PSU switch on/off seems to solve it.

I searched more about this and other people are having same problem, but with different power supplies...
I think its a glitch somewhere... I went into the bios and then the boot setup and disabled fast boot.

next day cold boot it started flawlessly... same about of boot time though this system is fast. 14 sec start.
will post again if it F***s up again...

the techs that checked my system ?? asus?? if you sent it to asus yhey may be doing a cover there a$$ thing in the hopes you go away

I used asus in the past but my ''last'' few over the past few years have benn not so good unless you like to trouble shoot and do lots of tinkering on one there just not the asus I grew up with any more ..

I guess your at the point unless you stumble across the issue or swap out parts to see is something is up with one of them I don't know what more to say..
you can read here on how the last asus went for us

The store i purchased it from suggested i look at the CPU and the pins inside of the motherboard.

I didn't see any bent pins or other unusual thing going on upon inspection. Although after i put it back in, the cold boot error seems to have gone away. The tech support's theory was that the heat sink was pressing too hard on the processor.

Haven't had the error in 2 days, hopefully that solves the problem for others who have the same error.
>>> Spoke too soon, happened again.
RMAd it

Sent it back to store, they replaced the power supply got it back, but the issue still persists.

Any ASUS gods out here in the threads, can help me what to do next?

I never recommend Asus because their just riding out the good name they had at one time and making a killing from boards that you can get higher quality parts in from others at the same price range or the really killer profit margin they make from the letters ROG.
Actually I have recommended one when it was $80 off with a combo deal including the processor.

I have used gigabyte and MSI before, this is actually my 2nd ASUS rig.
What's weird though is that the techs that checked my system can't replicate this issue when i sent it to them, they didn't experience it once.

My thoughts exactly, it's still the store warranty it's only been a month since i've bought the rig.

I use asrock and gigabyte -- but that's me
this build is a asrock z87 extreme 6[2ed choice] my first choice was the gigabyte z87 ud4h but the day I went to buy the asrock went on sale and the giga went up so asrock went in the cart that day

one thing about your issue did you take a magnifying glass and look to see if you got any bent pins in the cpu socket ?? I'm sure you googled around for things to resolve the issues you got and check them all out but then I guess if they seen any when you sent it in they would have told you and claimed it as user abuse and been done with you ..

I don't know what to say not being there for hands on but as with any brand theres a chance you can get a lemon, but to me it seems asus now a days got too many ..

Yup, did the troubleshooting. Looked for bent pins, took out heat sink and put it back, disconnected all cables and reconnected them again, looked at the screws on the motherboard, played around with the DRAM voltage settings, updated the BIOS which i found wasn't updated the first time the rig got here.

The board is for RMA now, they replaced the power supply the first time. I think the shop is doing it's best to help me, they're letting me choose a replacement now.

Just looking now at mobos to replace it with, looking at MSI or gigabyte
Thanks for taking time junkeymonkey really appreciate it.

It could be i just got lucky and got a bad one, although i just find it weird that the techs weren't able to replicate the problem. Also the solutions for the exact same thing on the threads don't seem to be a standard fix.

Just realized that, i've been reading up all day, scouring the threads for issues, MSI isn't looking good.

I am leaning towards this one:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128707&cm_re=GIGABYTE_GA-Z97X-UD5H-_-13-128-707-_-Product

almost the same price range

that would be sweet-- theres a moderator guy here sr71 black bird I think I seen he said he had one get with him and see how its working out for him..

I was looking at the asrock z97 and I cant believe the cost they got on them makes the giga look like a good deal 194$ for the extreme 4 ,wow that seems a little steep to me ....
