So, I really can't decide between the Pentium G3258 or the newer Athlon X4 860K for a budget build. I know there are a lot of AMD/Intel fanboys, but I might as well ask.

More about : intel pentium g3258 athlon 860k

imho you should keep $115 i3-4150 as a option too.

But wouldn't a OC'd Pentium be almost the same as a i3-4150?

Not even close. It doesn't have hyper threading and it is missing many instruction sets. It is a gimped pos.

So I shouldn't even think about the Athlon?

The 860K is getting some pretty good reviews. It's basically a 7850K without the integrated graphics. The G3258 is not a POS. It has it's issues but the value plus the performance you can get out if it is really nice. It's a dual core processor...I think most know the limitations before buying it.

With the Athlon X4 860K, you are getting Two extra cores, 4MB of L2 Cache (Compared to 3MB of L3 Cache on the Pentium), and a Faster base clock (3.7Ghz on the Athlon, 3.2Ghz on the Pentium). Plus, if you hook up the 860K with a R9 270X, You'll be able to play most games now at 1080p on Medium-Ultra settings.

With the Pentium, You are getting tons of Overclocking potential (Assuming you know how to overclock your CPU), which can lead to improved performance. However, since it only has 2 cores, I doubt its future potential at this point. However, hook it up with a GTX 750 ti or 760, and 1080p gaming is very possible.

Overall, it's really up to you. Personally, I would prefer the 860K, but both CPU's are great when hooked up with the right graphics card. In the end, it's all a matter of your preference and I don't want you to end up like the fanboys. Just waver your options and choose what you think is best for your money.

Hope this helps.

What are you planning to do with this build; gaming, photo editing, HTPC, 24/7 server? Whilst the Athlon is probably the better gaming processor, a Pentium makes more sense for basic tasks, with its lower TDP and better energy efficiency. In this case, a non-overclockable Pentium is even better.

i have the 860k paired with the R9 270x and you couldnt pay me to swap it for the competition. overclocked to 4.2 and she is absolutely killing it my friend.

I'm really considering the 860k..but what temps are you getting at OC?and also base?..I live somewhere that rarely goes below 30*C and I'm planning on a CM elite 110 build..that's what would refrain me getting it.

stock temps idle around 30 degrees and under load i never break 50. im overclocked to 4.2Ghz currently and idle is about 35-38, under load i hit 50.

i actually have the Elite 130 case on its way along with the Cooler Master Seidon 120M water cooler. i'm interested to see how well it performs in the mini ITX case under water! ill post back if you'd like and report my temps in the 130, i know its a little bigger than the 110 but maybe it will give you an idea (if you're going to be under water).

50*C ..that's on stock cooler?in a big case?where do you live anyway, I'm just concerned especially summer time here..in the hottest place in a tropical country..always sunny, warm wind and minimal air movement.. And please give updates on your mITX build, on stock cooler(if it doesn't trouble you) and watercooled..thank you.

50 degrees under a Hyper 212 while running Folding@Home for 8-10 hours at a time overclocked at 4.2Ghz while my house is about 22 degrees in a mid tower case with optimal air flow.
