Solution

Intel processors have more overall power in each core of the processor than an AMD does. AMD might go on with marketing many-cored processors but Intel had just caught up to AMD with these Haswell 8-cores, and Intels overall have a higher transistor count. A 3.5Ghz AMD is probably weaker than a 3.0Ghz Intel because frequency is not the only factor. As I said, more transistors is one thing that brings lower clock rates to perform more calculations each cycle. There is also processor cache that needs accounted. And I like Intel since they have been in the CPU business a long time (not sure about AMD).

Also, Intel processors use up much less power than AMDs do and can be overclocked higher typically, too. Also, less heat.

AMD and Intel are both about the same age. AMD is a about 1 year younger than Intel.

As for AMD or Intel. Depends on your usage in the one case you have a faster CPU for games and most applications from Intel on the otherhand you have more memory that would allow for multitasking and large workloads. So it depends on what you are going to be doing. If you are going to be using most of that memory then in those cases where 8GB is not enough the AMD system will run faster because the Intel chip wouldn't be fed the data it needs to work (thrashing data from a slower HDD/SSD used for Virtual memory).
