Hyper 212 running hotter than stock heatsink!

Why is this happening? I used the stock thermal compound, and I did have to break of some of the copper pope that was sticking out the top of the heatsink since it was a little too tall for my case. My case was NZXT Source 210. Did I just install the heatsink incorrectly?

Solution

Try reseating it with NEW thermal compound, if you used the stuff from the stock heatsink that could be why its not working well. If that does not fix it its probably stuffed. Buy a new cooler that fits in your case

Could be a lot of things. I'm not terribly familiar with the heat pipe design on the 212, but I don't think shortening the portions on the top would have much effect on the cooling profile. I'd guess thermal paste issues, honestly.

What do you recommend me to do now then?

Saw your case. If you tell me what motherboard you have as well as what ram you have and how many slots are filled
I have a shorter and better cooler I can recommend. It is 152mm tall. It will fit as far as height.

It depends how much of the tube was cut off, i don't know how much he cut off. If he took like 2mm off it probably wouldn't have compromised the seal but if he took the whole top of the tube off it would. It all depends on if the seal was broken. From his question it sounds like he just stuck in on the top of the paste left on the cpu, it all depends on if the heatpipe lost its seal

If he took off 2mm on all then the cooler is toast.
