I recently bought a 1tb external hard drive and it shows that there are 64gb of used space out of the 931gb available. I stored about 150gbs of pictures and videos on it before deleting them all. The drive is completely empty but it shows that 64gbs are used up. Also, the drive randomly ejects by itself and reconnect to the computer. I tried several USB ports and computers and it still does that.

When a drive is formatted, a file table, or system is created to map data put on to the drive.
That is why when looking at the drive you have roughly 931Gb of space free.
The quoted size or storage capacity of a drive is before it is formatted with a NTFS , GPT file system.
