Good Day Community,

My router is currently working properly, I think. I can browse properly and fast, download fast wether using a download manager or native browser. But when I use uTorrent, I can hardly reach 30Kb download speed. I'm connected to the router through LAN and not through WiFi.

When I connect to the modem, through LAN, I can attain again high speed download on uTorrent. Is there a setting to tweak in the tp link router to make my download faster? Bandwidth control is disabled. I have attached the current settings of my router. Hope someone can shed some light on my problem. Big thanks

Solution
This is more than likely a double-NAT issue. Both your modem and router are handling DHCP and assigning private IP addresses (meaning your modem actually has an integrated router). Torrent clients have trouble connecting to other clients when double-NAT is involved. There are 2 main ways to solve this.

1. Put your modem/router in bridge mode. This will allow your stand-alone router to be assigned the public IP and solely handle DHCP for your LAN. You should be able to find instructions on how to do this, but you'll need to post the make and model of the modem if you need further assistance.

2. Disable routing on your stand-alone router. This allows the modem/router to handle DHCP, but keeps you from using many of the native functions...

You'll need to connect a cable from the modem to a numbered LAN (not WAN or Internet) port on the router, and disable LAN DHCP on the router.

Thanks for the quick reply BuddhaSkoota. I'm not a very techie person so I hope you'll be patient withi me :)

As for the make and model of my modem, please see image below. I hope its correct.

Yes, your modem is actually a modem/wireless router, so I'm assuming there is a reason you have a second wireless router connected (e.g. better performance, extended coverage).

I would recommend trying the easy way first by disabling routing on the TP-Link. This procedure allows your modem/router to perform all DHCP/routing functions.

- Log in to the TP-Link at 192.168.0.1

- In the left column, click on DHCP, the DHCP Settings.

- Select Disable for DHCP Server.

- Move the cable from the WAN (Internet) port on the back of the TP-Link to a numbered LAN (yellow) port.

- Reboot the modem and the TP-Link. It's a good idea to reboot any connected devices as well.

Try out your torrent client and see if download speed has improved.

Yes, I bought the second router for bandwidth control in our house since the modem provided by my ISP has terrible QoS. I did what you have instructed and indead my torrent speed improved but now I cannot access 192.168.0.1 anymore.

Because you use your second router for QoS (and if you wish it to remain that way), you'll have to use the other method of bridging your modem. You'll need to remember to restore the TP-Link to the original settings in order access the GUI (router settings).

The process for bridging your modem involves a little more work. It would be best to follow the instructions provided in the owner's manual, or you may want to consult your ISP.

Here's a link to the manual which may provide complete instructions:

Thanks for that BuddhaSkoota. I followed your first instructions and now my torrent is fast and can confirm that bandwidth is controlled for the other devices using TPLink's QoS. On my modem, I enabled the Bridge Interface. I hope this is correct based on your first instruction.
