Hey I was looking at resource monitor and I found that out of my 8 gigs of memory only 4 are usable and the other 4 are Hardware reserved. I want to know is there a way to make more ram usable because I noticed that sometimes 4 gigs or ram isnt enough.

More about : memory hardware reserved

DOS 6.2 was known to reserve a large Extended Memory Area for DMA interrupts.

Since you want me to guess, I decided this answer was appropriate. If you want a better one, then how about you provide specifications and details of yuor system?

4GiB (probably one DIMM) is not operating correctly. The firmware was able to read the SPD and deduce that a particular quantity of memory is installed but it was unable to initialize that memory and map it into the physical address space. This can be caused by incorrectly seated memory, by faulty memory, by a faulty DIMM slot / motherboard routing, or by a faulty memory controller.

What you will need to do is perform a process of elimination by testing various DIMM/DIMM-Slot combinations. Start testing the modules that you have installed one by one. If one combination refuses to boot while others succeed, you've found the culprit. Once you've isolated the problematic component, file an RMA request.

You could also try a clear cmos.If this doesn't help look for a "memory remapping" option in the bios and see if this is enabled,if not enable this and see if this helps.

Well this is probbly not it because I have a laptop for a year and a half now and i never noticed this before. I only opened the computer one time for cleaning the filters not touching anything else.

Can try reseating the DRAM, if that doesn't help, might check w/ Asus and see if it's a known issue

I just found the solution. I went to msconfing on boot tab advanced options and there unchecked maximum memory. Now i have 8 gigs of ram available. Thanks for suggestions.

How does this ever get checked?

Don't know - might be a quirk in the BIOS of different mobos and how Win reads the hardware
