I`m switching from gtx 780 to gtx 970 (under my current circumstances it will not cost me anyting. But is this a bad idea? I have been told that I should definitly do it, but gpu comparison sites is telling me otherwise.

I got a 780 too and i am considering to do the same, but only if i can sell mine and take the 970 in the same money.
970 is not huge upgrade for a GTX780 is almost pointless. So if you had to pay another 350$ to take the 970 not worth at all.

You should definitely get the gtx 970 probably because this is a newer model, it consumes less power and is more efficient. And it performs better in games than the 780 in benchmarks.

If there`s no other costs involved it`s a good idea to do, you`ll get even a bonus by having less to pay on energy bills... though don`t expect them to be too significant.
