Might have fried graphics card or motherboard

Booted up my PC after reapplying some thermal compound to the processor and smelled some smoke and got no picture from the graphics card. Could it be that I've fried the graphics card or motherboard?
This is my first build and I don't have much experience in identifying what I've broken, so help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT

My specs are:
Intel i3 2100 3.1GHz
XFX Amd Radeon 7770 1GB
MSI H61M-P20 Micro ATX
Corsair 430W ATX12V
Windows 7 Home Premium

Does the computer power on at all? Smoke quite often means the power supply blew itself up - but if that happened, the machine would just be dead, no power, nothing.

If it does turn on, start with the components that were "touched." One could be the CPU - if it was removed and not re-seated correctly, or if the paste/heatsink job was not done properly (e.g., stuff dripped off the sides and down below, for one), then it could be toast. Usually there would be an error beep code for that - do you get one when you try to boot up?

Another thing that occasionally happens is if the small 4-pin motherboard power cable is unplugged to access the CPU, it is possible to jam that back in with the wrong orientation, with less than fun results. So if you took that cable off as part of your job, double-check how it's plugged in any you may find the problem.

I would think the GPU would be one of the least likely components to be fried, since you didn't touch that. Then again, a lot of things are possible if it was a power issue.
