Having Trouble With Conflicting Windows Files

So, my PC has been acting up recently. It began when I attempted to install Windows 8.1 through a disk I had laying around. The install failed, and it threw up the message "We'll restore your PC to the way it was before the install was attempted." However, after that, my PC wouldn't go all the way to sleep (fans/front panel LEDs still active) and it bluescreened on login. It said that it needed to be repaired, and so I threw in the repair disk for 7 (what I was/am on) and repaired it. It logged in, but it still refused to sleep. I tried to login this morning, and it bluescreened again. Not too surprising, I thought, but when I went to repair it again, something was different: The only OS it showed as being on my C drive was Windows 8.1, presumably from a time a while ago where I had it installed and then swapped to 7. So my question is this: could this be indicative of some conflicting Windows files that are causing a BSOD, and what should I do to stop these things from happening? Just re-install windows? Specs in profile.

i would run with out a overclock until my system was running ok again and all the windows updates applied and drivers updated. Making changes with a bad overclock can result in corrupted files.

i would also run the system file checker utility to check for file corruption
start cmd.exe as admin
sfc.exe /scannow

Ok so here's the current status: I reverted to stock clock speeds and installed Windows 8.1, but I now need the DVD in the PC to boot. It doesn't have to boot OFF the DVD, it just has to be there. If it's not, then it tells me "Windows can't boot".
