A couple years ago my sister got sick and asked me to buy her a little laptop for her so we could stay in touch, trade photos over distance, etc. I bought two identical Asus eeepc laptops for us both and within 6 weeks, she passed away from brain cancer. The unit I sent to her was given back to me. Hers I used for about a month, discovering many precious photos and video recordings, and many personal writings to family members in her last days. It was kinda shocking, as she told no one she was dying.
Her laptop on/off button was not centered correctly within the case, and was difficult to turn on and off, a poor design, the button was about 1/2 " long x 1/8" rectangular shape situated in the upper right corner of the case next to the case hinge. You had to push it down and forward or it would not clear the case. The motherboard corner would flex a bit. About a dozen uses and it no longer would come back up. The computer would not turn on again.
I called Asus and the tech was not helpful, suggested that it was mishandled and said if I could not trouble shoot it over the phone because I broke it, it would not be covered under the warranty he could not help me. I was upset but called again a few days later, was given a better rep,, I also emailed support with description of problem, but was told I would not necessarily receive the same unit back. All I really cared about getting back was what my sister had left on the hard drive, I received a email back but nothing that assured me it would be handled carefully. So I retired it hoping to find someone who would help or a method of turning it on to retrieve the data, control or override the swtch or hook the two laptops together, or just fix it.
A year went by, I talk to Best Buy salesman who assured me that their geeksquad could handle it. So I took it in and ask them to phone me prior to repairing it, they said it would be sent out with those instructions.A few weeks later they called, the computer was back, and I rushed in hoping it was simple and fixed. Not so, The bill was $125. to open and look at it , If I wanted it fixed, an addtional $650. No assurance on data on the drive.
The other unit has been a nice little machine. I have hoped still to find away to bypass the switch, or some recovery, at last resort maybe remove the hard disk or have it transplanted into the working one.Best Buy would not tell me what Mechanical failure " they found, was hoping as my last hope that someone at Tom's Hardware might shine a light for me. Sorry for length and thank you if you have taken the time to read and consider it.---Susan
