Hi, I recently acquired an old Dell XPS PC for about $50, but I am willing to spend a bit on meaningfull upgrades. It is for playing games, and the most taxing games I play currently are Civ5, Elite: Dangerous and the upcoming Beyond Earth. I never play shooters. For comparison I currently play these games on my 2011 MacBook Pro, and to me they run acceptably, but not great, on the lowest quality settings. While I enjoy high fidelity graphics, frame rate is more important to me.

The computer has these specs:
CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz, no hyperthreading)
Memory: 6GB DDR2 667MHz RAM
PSU: Dell 750W, it has 2x 6-pin connectors for a graphics card
Graphics Card: Asus GeForce 8800 GTX, 768MB RAM

For the upgrade, I am considering purchasing a Radeon R7 250X, R7 265, R9 270X or equivalent. Naturally I don't wan't to pay too much upgrading such an old computer. Are any of these GPU's overkill for the matching CPU? The price of the R9 270X is about as much as I am willing to spend in total.

Should I be considering other upgrades instead?

Thanks!

It depends to some extent on your mobo (does it have a PCI-Express x16 slot?), but honestly the Asus R7 260X-DC2OC-2GD5 is probably the most you'll need. That card gives you twice as much VRAM as your games will require, is a far better card than yours and is only $100.
