Hi I am planning on getting the asteck extreme 4 z97 motherboard and I'm also getting the i5 4690k 3.5ghz cpu.

I am wondering what the hell the difference is between a z87 and z97 and how would it benefit a situation or system?

I also want to know what broadwell is? I know that haswell is the new intel cpu technology but what is broadwell?

I plan on overclocking my cpu

First of all I think you're talking about ASRock.
Second, Z87 and Z97 are motherboard chipsets. Z87 was launched at the same time as Haswell, and Z97 ate the same time as Haswell Refresh and Devil's Canyon (essencialy the same as Haswell). However, Z97 will be compatible with Broadwell, which is going to be the next generation of Intel CPUs, and Z87 won't.

broadwell is intel's 5th gen core processor series
haswell is 4th gen (that is your i5-4690)
3rd gen is ivy bridge
2nd gen is sandy bridge
Z97 Express chipset supports the latest fifth generation Intel Core processors. Whereas Z87 Express offers support only up to the fourth generation chips. This means if you plan to upgrade to a ‘Broadwell’ chip in the future, you’ll need Z97 Express. If you’re planning on sticking with Haswell, then you could stick with Z87
