I have an HDTV digital cable box from my service provider. It has HDMI output, and I'd like to use it to get tv reception to my computer. I'd prefer to use an external, rather than a TV card. Any suggestions for the hardware needed??

In order to view all the channels you subscribe to in HD on your PC, you're going to want a cablecard TV Tuner like this Hauppauge WinTV-DCR-2650 Dual Tuner. This device does require a cablecard, leased from your cable company (usually about $2/month).

You can use an HDMI capture card to allow the hdmi output from your cable box to go into the PC for either watching or recording.

HDMI capture cards do not support HDCP so will not accept the output of a cable box. They do not want you to be able to record HD content. Get a monitor with an HDMI input.
