So I am building a pc and I am not sure. One day I want to max out my MOBO with 32gb (FAR from now.) Anyway I will be doing heavy gaming, possibly some video editing/converting, VMs too. If I do go with 8gb, could I just get one 8gb stick and then keep upgrading from there? Thanks.

Solution
You won't need 32gb for anything ever, unless you are making a Hollywood film with every video editing app known to man open at the same time. 8gb is enougn for gaming/mild video editing. 16gb for heavy video editing

@GRUxTSAR - There was a time when someone said no one would ever need more than 640K of RAM (yes, "K"). That said, this system will likely be completely obsolete long before the OP needs more than 16GB of RAM

@GoliGuy - If you're going to have multiple VM's open as well as video editing, I'd probably go ahead with 16GB of RAM.
