DPI is pretty much unimportant, I have a microsoft 400 dpi wheel mouse optical ( not to be confused with the more basic optical wheel mouse !) The only reason I am unhappy with it is because the middle mouse button doesnt work ( and its not just this particular mouse this is one in a long line of wheel mouse opticals that Ive had!). When I say it doesnt work , I have throw gren connected to middle mouse button and it will randonly throw grens at the most inconvienient of times, including, but not limited to, if you put this mouse down firmly. Also it wont throw it if you want it to !

Reasons I like this mice over any other mice are :-
1) Its light, enabling me to move fast.
2) It has slick teflon feet which work really well on a cloth mouse mat,
I tried dimpled feet , they sucked.
My hands are shacky, and the only way to counter this is to have my wrist pressed down on a cloth mat and control the movement of the mouse. Dimpled feet made the mouse sticky on the cloth pad. Even with all the modern mice in the world I hardly ever loose a 1 to 1 bunfight in battlefield bc2.

I am pretty sure that I want an led, rather than a laser mouse because I think they are lighter.
With shaky hands dpi over 1000 is unlikely to be of any benifit !

3 buttons ( including middle wheel) is fine.
Can anyone recommend a simple basic mouse that would fit these requirements ?

Who makes the Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1?
The M500 is pretty lightweight when compared to my G500 (without any weights...
My wife and grandson use this mouse, Logitech M500. Grandson games and when I am on the PC I have shaky hands so we slow it down in the Windows Control Panel; bump it back up when we're done for my wife's use.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104328&ignorebbr=1

I use a Logitech G500 wired mouse, but I think that it is discontinued. It's replacement was the G500S. It is a gaming mouse but the sensitivity can be adjusted; first in the software and then on-the-fly. Set Point software seems to work o.k.
Problem is y ou would probably have to buy one used.

That M500 has been in use by all of us for about 6 years now. The wheel and the sensitivity have worked just fine. I bought her's at Best Buy, and the link I gave you is for Newegg. If you don't live in the U.S., use pcpartpicker.com and click your country in the upper right corner and start searching.
Hope this helps.

Just looked at the specs for that, it looks quite nice, though Im not sure if it might be 2 heavy or not. I think I might need to try it to see. I put my mouse on the scales and it says 80g, the spec sheet for that one is 145g. I havent actually really looked at lazer mice for 10-15 years, so I dont know if they might be perfect now, but I know the original ones felt a bit heavy to me. Looking on the logitech website it appears it might be their rather basic m100 that I want ! But Im definatley open to recommendations, and Ill ty and check out the m500 or similar when Im next in a store.

Hmm now Im not so sure about the m100 even :( Just found another thread where it thumbs up my mouse !(Wheel mouse optical)!

http://www.overclock.net/t/1392385/logitech-m100-worst-mouse-in-the-world/10

"£10? I can find a better mouse for £7 guess what it is the Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1 - the mouse with the most precise tracking out of any mouse in the world... beats Deathadder, G500, G400, Mionix Naos 5000 etc etc... and any other new and flashy gaming mice on the market by miles by MILES. Only con is 400 DPI but its good for Quake and CS (the best) since you can map sensitivity and cursor/crosshair movement 1:1."

The M500 is pretty lightweight when compared to my G500 (without any weights in it). As far as laser or optical, if you are not heavily into games then the optical might be a better choice. I have used my lazer mice on a variety of surfaces: My wife's is on a standard cloth mouse pad, I am using a hard gaming pad but also use my desk top and soft pads and have had good results. Only problem mouse I have had was the MadCatz R.A.T. 7, it was dual laser and would not track on my hard pads -- but that is not the kind of mouse you want, too heavy and too expensive, and it broke in a year.
Currently using an optical Microsoft wireless mouse in my classroom, and have been truly impressed by its response and sensitivity; even gamed with it some in CoD MW3 and it has plenty of response.

The wheel mouse optical is a microsoft product ( apparently now discontinued, though I did see someone wanting £100 for a new one on ebay!) I have a few second hands ones left still, though what faults any have is another question !.
I have done more looking than I should on this today and I am erring towards either a microsoft basic mouse v2, or a microsoft comfort mouse of some kind or maybe tecknet high precision gaming mouse 2000 or 4000 dpi at £10 to £15 ! (Apparently some kind of rebadged high end mouse, or at least some are! (the 5 star review ones I think!)
I am kind of drooling over the latest NVidia 970 GTX graphics card for taking screenshots in skyrim which is squeezing any other budgets :)

Btw the 80 grams for mine was without the lead, with the lead its 130, for what its worth. The quoted weights never tend to mention if the lead is included or not! Though I have noticed that some gaming mice can adjust the weights for user preference!

I had a look in town today and there were no mice to try in any shops, so I would need to go to an out of town store to try some.

I did find an old basic logitech optical mouse in my house ! But whilst it looks perfect on paper, and even feels kind of ok, it just doesnt feel as nice to hold or use as my current one.

I have been put off the m500 by the reviews of the scroll wheel . I sometimes use it to change weapons so freewheeling is no good, and the other scroll mode didnt sound that great either !. Though it might be that if I try it I fall in love with it, so who knows !
I dont feel I can justify £50 on something like the g500 which I know will wear out in a few years and want replacing.
I had mice with extra buttons, but I never seamed able to use them. I always pressed the when I shouldnt. Holding a mouse and pressing 3 buttons seems to be the limit of my abilities !

Anyway thanks for your help and insights. Though if truth be told I am more confused than when I started and might yet just stick with my current mouse and just curse every time I die due to it throwing a gren when it shouldnt!

You are very welcome. RE. the GTX 970: You aren't the only one drooling. I have decided to try to get one as a Christmas gift. Going to start my suggestions to family later this week.
Just a final thought: Have you tried blowing the mouse out with an air compressor set at, say, 40-60 psi? It sounds like there simply might be a bunch of crud in the thing causing the problems.
I, too, have dropped a grenade at my feet by touching my scroll wheel - thus giving my opponents an easy kill. For the most part I have moved that function solely to another keyboard key (Usually G) to avoid inadvertent suicide.
Please repost when you decide what to get or put back into service, I'd kinda like to hear how it goes.

Ok Ill try to give an update in a week or so when I ve come to some conclusion !
And its not just when I accidently press it, its often when firing and nowhere near the mouse wheel it will decide to stop firing and go through a grendade throwing motion. Though Im generally dead before it releases ! Though looking at my mouse I didnt realise just how close the buttons are to the wheel. A little bit of play in the buttons and dirt might well be at the root of my problem !

Well Ive tried out a few more mice since my last post, all with their faults.
1) An old Dell mo56uo ? A biggish mouse, which although it had big feet didnt slide around my mouse mat very well.
2) Two old logitechs one an m90, and whilst quite good, the feet are slightly too small to slide around a cloth mouse mat well.
These mice are slightly smaller than the wmo, though I thought I could probably get used to it though. Though it just didnt feel quite right in game, though my score was ok.

As a glide test I threw / slid them across my mouse mat and the dell stopped at a quarter of the mat, the logitechs at 3/4 and my microsoft went half off the mat.
Btw it turns out the particular wheel mouse optical (wmo) Ive been using is the original, not the 1.1.

So after reading a few reviews of the microsoft basic optical mouse v2.0 It kind of appeared to be the logical modern replacement for the discontinued wmo. So I thought I would give it a shot. As someone had said it was a bit big for them, I thought well it cant be too small.
So I splashed out on one. Whilst I got them, to show it me first, I was in a bit of a hurry, and it kind of seemed Ok, maybe a bit small, but it did have good looking feet ! (The feet looked like the sort that glide well!)

So a mouse with good tracking that glides well ( it passed my mat glide test like the wmo), what can go wrong ?
Well the single biggest problem, not mentioned in any reviews I looked at, though sort of obvious if you see a picture, is that it has a bar, a border around the mouse. The bar is exactly where I rest my finger on the right mouse button and where I press that button ! So I sort of have to press with the inside of my knuckle ! How no one else notices this is beyond me.
Also Im starting to think size is a bit of an issue, for maximum control and comfort.
For some reason I dont seem to be able to aim up as quickly as before, not quite sure why.
And the mouse wheel is quite stiff to turn, so not so good for scrolling around documents .
As others have pointed out the button clicks are louder, though this doesnt bother me.
On the plus side I havent had too many problems with my old mouse since cleaning off a bit of muck. Though I havent used it that much in games since, so may be too early to tell. It never was a problem in anything other than that one game, but it was really annoying when it did happen.

I adjusted in game and windows mouse speed with these higher dpi mice (under mouse buttons in the control panel ! ). Though somehow they managed to feel too fast and too slow at the same time, though the tracking on them was working fine. Not quite sure how!
Anyway in summary I think I just invested £10 in a lemon, and will probably go back to my old wheel mouse optical again ! Though Ill try and give the new basic mouse a bit more of a go first. Next time I think Ill probably try for the logitech m500 that you suggested.

Well, at least you didn't drop 40-50 pounds on one that didn't fit and work.
I haven't mentioned the following because of the high cost and frequent failures but it is worth mentioning now.
MadCatz R.A.T. 7 or the R.A.T. 5. My 2nd youngest and oldest grandsons havethe RAT 5, since this March, and love it.
I bought the 7 and my wife liked it so much I had to immediately get her one.
It was the best mouse I ever used.
The fit and to some degree the weight is all customizable; especially so in the 7. This was the mouse that would not track properly on a hard mousing surface, but worked really well on a regular mouse pad.
Now, the bad reviews were out there and I read them, but I decided to try it anyway. My wife's started to fail about 7 months in, and mine stopped tracking just short of 1 year; but others in the reviews have had them for years without trouble.
I mention them because of the adjustabiliy. Nothing I used before, nor since - including my Logitechs, has been as comfortable.
Just a passing thought.
