I recently realized I could buy a modem so I can get rid of the comcast rental fee. I bought this modem from newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825122015

After using it for a while I notice weird issues and eventually diagnosed it as lag. It took a while because I actually dont experience lag all that often so I thought it was software related. Now that I installed a ping monitor program I found that I have 9%-15% ping loss at any given time.

My internet connection was perfect when I rented a modem from comcast, but now with the aftermarket one im getting lag issues. Should I go to comcast about this or just return my modem for a higher quality one?

Motorola surfboard modems are some of the most popular you will find. It is just a little confusing with arris buying this part of motorola and now you get a mix of both names on various products.

If you look in the wan settings you should be able to see the signal level for both up and down streams. There are a number of guides describing what these numbers should be and I can't do better so I won't duplicate them here.

Most the time poor signals are a result of problems with the cables or the splitters. It can be as simple as some water got in or you have a lose connection. After you verify there is nothing wrong in the house I would have the ISP see if they can find any issues with the wires to your house.

The modem you have is actually one of the better ones.

I bought it because it was fully certified on the comcast site, it had the docsis 3.0 for future proofing, and it was a reasonable price. I just noticed now that it was giving me lag issues and I already got rid of the box so I cant return it through newegg. The signal strength looks fine when I check it out through the modem as well. I bought a used DOCSIS 2.0 router and im gonna give that a try to see if that fixes the issue. If it does im sending this back to motorola to be repaired since I am sure they will take an RMA that is 31 days old.

Every time I get a comcast guy over here he just does a bunch of crap I could have done myself and tells me he cant replicate the problem. In this case hes definately gonna try and put a new modem on the rental plan again which I did all this just to get out of for.
